ouch!

As a Shoei Raid wearing newbie, I guess I'm one of the people Original GSer ids referring to. I bought the DVD and the book - I love it. I bought the bike for a couple of reasons:
1. By all accounts it's a great bike (GS1200)
2. My mate has an 1150 GS and going out with him sold me on the bike.
3 Loved my Harley but it's a little limited.

Talking of Harley, I hoped I'd left behind the sneer of fellow riders because I didn't have the right gear, now it seems 'll get sneered at if I do! You get 'overly protective' people in all groups, people who want us to look on with envy at what they're doing- but are not allowed to join in!. I don't mind his/her comments - it's his/her opinion I have only one question. I rode my HD all year but it was not best suited to bad weather, (I'm sure you're one who regularly slagged them off) I don't own an all weather suit. It appears I'm not really allowed one now  .... So what should I wear when I go out during the winter months?, my sou'wester and wellies? :teacher

I couldn't resist dowing a member search for OriginalGSer, he appears to have taken his ball and gone home :nenau

Simple Envy!

God, it's amazing how accurate she is with her description ...of ME! From the mid-life crisis, to the gazing at myself in the shop windows as I pass on my GS, to the Tour X helmet. Guilty as charged (shall I send photos)!!! But I didn't get the ideas from a magazine. Oh no: I'm a "baby boomer." EVERYTHING I find that I fancy, a line is already busy forming for. Call it collective consciousness. Were you trying to be critical? I think your description sounds both fun and attractive. But you make it sound like we're everywhere. Ummm, not unless it's Halloween, and a lot of GS's are suddenly out masquerading as sportsbikes. GS sightings are rare as hen's teeth, by comparison, ...at least in London.

Lighten up, Squeeze Dick. What's your Rx for a midlife crisis then? ...F_ck the dog and beat the wife?
You've had your fun taking the piss (actually, it sounds like simple envy). Now paint us a picture of your elegant alternative.

Wish that I had never bought that tt tank-bag !
I reckon that it was me who started him going outdoors again, after seeing my reflection plus gs shod tt tank-bag going past checking me and my bitch out in his two way mirror.

shop window???

dunno wot your on about

Hein Gericke Rallye

I bought my Hein Gericke Rallye suit before I had ever thought of buying a GS. I was riding a K1200RS at the time, but have subsequently had an 1150 and 1200GS (my current bike).

What would OriginalGSer make of this? Have I bought a GS just to go with my bike suit?

Should I invest in some psychiatric help yet? Or is it too late?

Robin.

I think it quite sad that someone has to post under a false name to make a few suggestions which I for one have alot in common with.

Yes I suppose that I'm still having a mid-life crises. I only started riding two years ago and wanted a bike that I wouldn't ride too fast on and where my legs weren't all cramped up.

I watched the long way round and it did make me look at BMWs, as I was having a few problems with the electrics on my then Multistrada.

So a deal was done on a 1200 GS and I haven't looked back although I haven't slowed down as much as I intended to do!

So, as one of those with 'more money than sense', according to my mother-in-law, I bought the bike.

I have some HG gear, but not an off-road suit type thingy, a Shoie XR1000 helmet although I did look at a Tour-X.

And maybe I do look at myself in shop windows but maybe because I can't quite believe that at 51 years old, I have actually achieved a dream and have become a biker.

I'm proud of the bike that I ride, but it is more than just riding something that is a little different to most bikes on the road. For me, it has put the fun back into motoring, so much so that I'd prefer to be on the bike than in my rather luxurious VW Touareg.

Ooops, so I also own a 4X4 so there's clearly more wrong with me than I first thought!

Yes, I'd like to be slimmer and, of course, younger but I'd also like to look better with my helmet off than on which, short of plastic surgery, is unlikely to happen.

But having said this, I can laugh at myself and I don't take myself too seriously.

If you hadn't posted this under a false name, you may well have got more thought out responses rather than simply being dismissed as a troll - even though you have clearly achieved your aim of provoking a very long and sometimes abusive thread.

Oh and I went to the NEC to look for my next bike (sorry toy) and still can't find another bike that I'd rather ride!

Maybe I'll put the off-road suit on my Xmas list then! :D

Reflections from a non-GS'er

First of all you'll be happy to hear this thread is gaining you fame on other UK bike sites - whether this is a good thing or not I'll let you judge for yourselves.

Having just spent the last hour reading through this thread I have to say there's a lot of people here taking themselves way way too seriously. OG made some valid points, whatever his ultimate motive was, but I've not seen anyone lay into each other like this since the last time I watched a David Attenborough documentary. At the end of the day biking is about doing what we like best, enjoy the freedom and have a laugh, not about image and status.

Secondly I'm quite amazed at how much credit you guys give Ewan and Charlie. Apart from giving BMW soaring sales figures they really didn't contribute that much to biking with LWR. They might have read the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook, but obviously missed the second sentence in the introduction chapter - "....adventure motorcycling... involves a challenging unsupported journey into the wilderness ....." The guys had more support (and money) than your average Paris-Dakar team, and I would very much think the guys over at Advrider.com and Horizonsunlimited.com thought the whole thing not much more than a glorified rich boys weekend away. For anyone having watched the series / read the book I'd suggest go out and buy Ted Simon's fantastic book "Jupiters travels" to learn for yourself what a RTW trip actually is all about (+ he can actually write!).

Personally I ride a Tiger (I know you're probably used to see our back ends most of the time ;) ) which I'm very happy with. Doesn't mean I've never looked at a GS or a 950, but I park it up after every trip with a big grin on my face, which is what it's all about. The day I finally do a RTW trip I will ride a XT - if you ask why you've probably missed the point...

OK, bring on the flames ....

Why? Apart from having terrible taste in bikes, you've hit the nail squarely on the head. Maybe I should duck too

WHEN you've ridden an XT round the world, write your next thread. I thought LWR was fantastic TV. I couldn't give a toss how much back-up they had. They rode a GS, AROUND THE WORLD. It was entertainment. That was all. Why is everyone comparing them to Ted, Mondo Enduro etc. I watched Mondo enduro/terra circa and LWR, they were all brilliant series. It's not for me to judge who was tougher or who carried the sprit of freedom the best ( although Mondo and Terra were far tougher and carried the spirit of freedom better :D )

And the Tiger is shit. No wonder you're on the GS forum ;)

Well said, that man!

Compared to:
X Factor
Big Brother
Get me out of here...
Love Island
et al :barf :barf
and all the other 'reality' shows, LWR was good entertainment IMHO

God! You lot should take a rest.
Anyway, I don't get these Heine Gericke Toureg or BMW Rally suits. Where's the sense in having to strip off completely, on the side of the road, in order to put the water proof bit INSIDE when it starts to rain?? To me, it's a bit like buying an oil head BMW ........BIZARRE! :mcgun

Or like complaining that it should be given a rest and then posting a deliberately contoversial p.o.v??

 :tosser

That's our 'H' foy ya, comes over here once in a while pisses in the font, lights the fuse and then scarpers back to the Triumph Owners Club for a giggle :D

It was no better when he had a GS

What a bloody fantastic thread thread, where is that mad professor who wanted to do a study of us, :censor::censor::censor::censor: me he'd have a whole thesis here. It just shows what a diverse bunch of :tosser we are. Except for the fella with the tiger who is obviously a c**t!

TTtigger, I find myself agreeing on lots of the points you make, I cannot for the life of me work out why anyone has taken OriginalGSers post so personally. It made me grin when I read it ,not get angry. I couldn't care less if I fit his description or not ,I like my 1200 & I bought it to ride, Thats what you folks should be doing instead of sitting there taking offence at nothing.
Personally I love riding the gs, but it wouldn't bother me if I had to go to a Honda 90 if times got hard,(been there) because I still enjoy riding bikes, any bikes. Its about the pleasure you get out of them ,not what model & gear youve got, lets get back to basics.
ride safe trev
I imagine my arse will get warm as well shortly too.
