i cant start my gs

hi, i tried to start my bike the other day and it made a odd sound that i didnt register that well at the time, a click or a pop and then it didnt start. the light dimmed till it looked almost dead and i assumed it was the battery. i tried to bump start it and it started up for 30seconds to a minute then started cutting out and died. i did this several times but always the same result. i thought it must need a fully charged battery for all the electrics but put the battery on to charge today and the charger had it charged in half an hour and it was reading out 12.5 volts.. is that low for a freshly charged battery? i wired it back in but nothing happened just a clicking from near the battery. i put a voltmetre on the starter and nothing registered on the voltmeter when the starter button was pressed.

all in all i'm a bit miffed. does anyone have any ideas of things i can try or ways to diagnose it? many thanks

oh and also the ABS light stayed on for the brief moments it was running.

really, for sure? it did need a top up of water, about an inch from the top...

To check if a new battery is needed, get some jump leads and CAREFULLY connect to your car battery..DO NOT ..DO NOT.. START THE ENGINE IN THE CAR...Leave the battery's connected together for at least a minute..
After a minute or two turn the bike ignition on, check the kill switch is in "run" mode, Check the bike is in neutral, don't just look at the green neutral light CHECK its in neutral. After a few seconds touch the start button... If it starts straight away then your battery is fubar...If not then you need to dig deeper..... good luck
PS.. check your side stand switch as well..

When you was jump starting the bike was you twisting the throttle ???
I take it you know about the "no touch" throttle on start up...

Most bikes batteries r sealed gel type batteries now aren't they?
What type of water did you put in it?

Definitely sounds like a new battery. A local mot station or halfords should have a load tester you can use to check the state of the battery. A simple home charger is insufficient to tell you it's state.

If u can get to fuel pump fuse u can do the "poor mans" test, see similar here::

If it has been on charge with insufficient gel / ionised in it water you may have cooked it.

Just re-read op. if voltage dropping below 9v to "nothing" on turnover then battery is gone.

Take seat off, base of false tank on right hand side a plastic cover over a large brass terminal, goes direct to + on battery.

And the connection for the negative is a noticeably longer bolt near the front sprocket cover.

It's the brass post in the centre of the black square plastic thing with a hole at each corner.

Unfortunately I don't see owt like that on mine (the black rectangle's the fusebox lid)
What I do see, is a modification in the making though... Any chance of some piccies illustrating the cable routing to where it meets up with the battery terminal?

Is yours a single spark? If so, maybe it was introduced on the twin spark.

Edit - seems it was only on the later bikes.

thanks for all your reply's. my bike is charging the battery and will start on a good battery so it is dead and time for a new one. but whats the best battery? my bike doesnt have the charging point either. 2001 model. damn shame. think i may have to rig something up...

Well, that's three of us probably in need of a new battery, perhaps there's scope to seek out a discount from somewhere; albeit sending the batteries to different addresses?
