Took out a blue one today - had a slot from 10.30 until 3pm

Once shown all the modes and gadgets, she was good to go

Fired it up - sounded nice, with a fruity note from the exhaust but quite a bit of mechanical clatter at cold though

Started off in Road mode and took off, carefully warming her up and snaked my way through the metropolis that is Rotherham and Sheffield and out to the Peak District, via Owler Bar

The weather was overcast, with a few damp patches here and there

The bike went well and it was easy to stick to 20/40/50/60 limits - although the speedo was hard to read at times

Sometimes there was a slight 'surging/jerkiness' at speeds through town, but I was getting used to it

Screen was good in a TourX with no earplugs and the seat was comfy for a couple of hours stints

Gear changing was 'hit and miss' - sometimes it would perform lovely, snicking into gear and up and down the 'box perfectly and other times it was noisy, imprecise and the lever would engage a 'longer throw', not meshing properly

However, I found the gear lever/footpeg position fine and always made positive contact with the lever............unhindered by the sidestand knob or centrestand heel

Rear brake was another matter and needs an extender

Once out on the open road, I engaged Dyna and the bike was fast and took off like a 'scalded cat', which was fun for a while, but made everything a bit frantic so switched back to Road mode

I did a mixture of backroads in Edale to Kinder Scout and then over to Mam Tor and then down Wynatt's Pass into Castleton, stopping for lunch at the Woodbine

Leaving Hope after lunch, I went to Grindleford after Hathersage and then up over Calver and Froggatt Edge

It was then I found Rain mode - although it was dry

Rain was my fave mode - it made the bike super smooth and allowed proper GS style riding - smooth, fast and making progress - rather than fast & frantic of Dyna

I used Rain all the way back and got back to the Dealer at 1pm, instead of 3pm - not bothered about riding it any longer

So, my thoughts

Great bike, fast and nimble, well balanced with nice control

Loads of gadgets, useful for some but a distraction for me and spoiled the ride - I wish I had found Rain mode from the off

Gearbox was hit and miss, engine was noisy - but they were part of the character........I 'spose

Suspension was harsh, crude (nearly took yer fillings out) and underdamped....... in all but Rain mode

If I bought one, I'd just use Rain mode

Jumping back on the lardy/slow and overweight 1150GSA with only 85bhp and no modes to play with.........but it was no hardship and the suspension was far superior for UK roads and its imperfections

I can see why some are raving about it, especially newcomers to the brand...BMW will sell bucketloads:thumb

Good review JB. I value your opinion. I take it that your GS is fitted with Ohlins shocks hence the negative comparison on suspension - right? The new GS does have a lot more power but IMO the old 1150 had enough power for real road "sensible" road riding. Still going to test ride a new GS myself - just to confirm:)

I take it you liked rain mode then:blagblah:blagblah

Good to hear you got your leg over at last, you've waited patiently, you seemed to have enjoyed the ride-for the most part;)
Still like that colour blue :thumby:

I'm surprised to hear you say that the suspension was harsh and under damped.

I thought it was pretty good for OEM suspension (and I've got full fat Wilbers on my 1200). I know the engine modes adjust the suspension to suit but did you play with the rider/pillion/luggage (or what ever they are) settings :nenau

Andres

PS I found 'rain' boring :D

Just wait until "Engineer" reads your review...............

He'll want to marry you! :hug

Al :D

so rain modes the way to go;)

It was for me & when I got back, some of the staff agreed who have ridden them

Nicest engine mode by far & less coarse than the others

Soon got bored of going fast - it's why I stopped riding Jap bikes

Good review

When you say needs an extender - is that because the brake pedal was too close to the body? I found I had to twist my foot inwards a bit to get the pedal more in the centre of the ball of my foot.

I would disagree about the suspension, if anything I found it a bit soft....but then I am comparing with a sports bike.

I found Rain mode a bit sedate...I'll probably use it for long motorway riding...and in the rain :D

+1

I don't think I realised it when I had my test ride, but you've hit the nail on the head. I can hustle my RT when I want/need to, but the GS would just bring out the inner hooligan in me, and I don't want or need that. You've hit the nail squarely on the head there - for me the new GS would be too quick!

What did you have the ESA set to JB?

Dunno initially, in reality - there was so much going on with the dash although I did cycle through ESA to Soft after about 1/3 of the ride because I found it so harsh

So after that it did get a bit better:D

However I must state, both my bikes have top quality fully adjustable suspension, one has Ohlins and the other Wilbers (and I know how and why to set them up, frequently adjusting them should the need arise, so I do know how a well set-up bike should ride)

I guess I've been spoilt;)

Me too, which is why I said I was surprised about your comments on the suspension, something can't have been right with yours or you had the twiddly wheel/buttons set wrong :nenau

There have been a few comments from peeps on here whose opinions I respect, all commenting on how good the suspension is so it's not just me.

Anyway, when are you getting one then, you know you want to :bounce1

i thought the suspension was pretty good for OEM. a bit underdamped, but never harsh. i too have wilbers on my own bike.

Rain mode was ok (in the rain), until i discovered Dynamic :)

Maybe, but there is such a myriad of options for power or suspension etc that it would take a while to get used to the system and 2-3 hours wasn't enough

First impressions were I didn't rate it, but may just be me:blast

Nice one JB, glad you got out on one eventually.:thumb:beerjug: But rain mode being the best:eek: This bike would be wasted on you.:comfort:D:hide

I agree .........but on some of the Peak District roads, can be a bit more of a test than those southern ones, you have to put up with:P

The Peak District ride we had a few years ago at the EM event, I think you enjoyed and found the roads pretty good:aidan
