I like it! Who had one?

I had a Super Tenere for around 8-9 years. I changed from an R1200GS. The S10 was at least as good a bike as the GS. I had much more confidence in it regarding not letting me down whilst away touring than I did in my GS. It was a very accomplished bike being good at everything and comfortable for 500-600 mile days. It was heavy but carried its weight well. Just a shame that Yamaha didn’t continue to develop it as the years passed. A new Super Tenere with the MT09 triple engine would be a great addition to the Yamaha range.
It’s not just Yamaha that seem to not develop their existing models. Honda didn’t bring a new Blackbird which was a great shame as I think my 02 Blackbird was the best bike I have owned but the model just disappeared with no replacement.

The Bimota Tesi has a similar hub steering front end? That looks interesting too!

Agreed, and it would seem to be in line with their philosophy of developing a broad range of models based on the proven CP2 and CP3 platforms. The move towards lighter adventure bikes would suggest an MT09 Tenere would be popular.

But… would it just steal sales from the MT09 Tracer? The line between ‘tallrounder’ and adventure bikes-with-road-tyres is becoming very blurred.

I did think about it taking sales from the Tracer. There would have to be a reasonable amount of difference between the two to make it viable.

AND the XT1200 Super Tenere.

All 3 didn't receive much press acclaim, and therefor didn't sell well, and subsequently were short-lived. Shame really because all 3 of these bikes (IMO) had a decent future but we'll probably never know!

Such a shame as the XT1200 Super Tenere was/is a brilliant bike. I sold mine 2 years ago and still miss it even though my Tracer 9GT+ is brilliant, I still have a sneaky search to see if there are any nice low mileage examples around.

Likewise, I sold my 2016 XT1200 after being offered a really good deal on a 2018 GSA, I still miss it.

The Xt1200 was a fantastic bike .

There was a bit of a thing with hub center steering in the early 90s

Yamaha had the GTS 1000
Bimota had the Tesi 1D with a Ducati motor
Nico Bakker had the QCS 1000 with an FZR1000 engine

There may have been others

I remember the Flitwick one being featured in Performance Bikes and ridden by Trevor (?) Franklin. From memory they claimed to haves shaved the equivalent weight of 2 sacks of potatoes off it, illustrated by Franklin holding said 2 sacks for the photoshoot.
I test rode the GTS from Webbs in Lincoln, nice bike but underwhelming.

A hub-centre front end is fantastic on a tourer as it majors on high-speed stability, but usually at the expense of nimbleness in the handling department.

Older tests I have read on the Bimota chassis praise its stability, but criticise the vague feel of the steering thanks to the large number of links and joints in the front end.

First and only time I saw a GTS1000 was somewhere in France when we were on route to La Rochelle in our Montego Estate (7 seater) with the kids in the back ……looked like the height of technology then 😎

Think I’ve just bought just such a bike. Found a Ducati dealer in Dundee advertising a 2024 model with 2k miles on it. It’s a NZ import, current owner returning to uk with 20odd bikes apparently. We’ve been talking about it for a week or so and today while I was out on a ride the wife rang them and put a deposit down. As long as the uk registration turns out ok and the V5 arrives it’ll be ours.
Not selling my current one. That’s got 37k on it already and will still be my main bike especially as I’ll be selling the Pan and my Bandit to help pay for it. The new one will be a little more pampered and kept for high days and holidays and when the wife’s with me.

Reminds me of the Big Honda Varadero

That is a lovely looking bike!

What’s so good about them?
Never ridden one, so educate me please 👍
They’re very similar to the BMW R1200 GS but without the reliability worries. A great, comfortable tourer. Good luggage system. Parallel twin as opposed to a boxer.
I bought mine simply because it wasn’t a GS really. Traded my GS in against it. I find it a little surprising they didn’t sell better. They are/were expensive so this may have had a bearing on the slow sales.
I would place the XT1200 between the GS and GSA.
