Right guys ive just purchased my much saved for r1150gsa and on 24k 2003 model, now i needed service bits for it and rang bmw up and ordered the parts, bearing in mind the bike is in really good condition, and i got talking to the parts guy and he said he would let me have the bmw history which is supposedly for bmw dealers eyes only, now it has the normal services and heres the cracker a engine rebuild bearings, pistons, rods, barrels, complete heads and timing rails and chains, not covered by warranty at 10421miles,now at 15459miles cam chain tensioner sticking failure and its had the whole shabang again,

now heres my dilemma ,when its cold it taps hard from the left head for a sec then its gone, then when its hot theres a deep but slight knock which is faint but gets worse when you pull the clutch, but i must emphasise its a real deep low slow knock, what do ya all think, i got it from an old fella who had it for 3 years and got it from bmw previosly, im confuzzed-do i strip down the motor ?and why did bm have to do the job twice, :nenau

Was it making this noise before you saw the screen?

I reckon your head is playing tricks with you. Flog it and buy another if it bothers you that much.

Hopefully Steptoe will be along soon to add his thoughts but many early 1150s had an issue with the LH cam chain tensioner which causes a knocking at start up and beyond.
This is a simple fix with an updated tensioner.....but of course it may not be that at all.

Look through the history and see if its had the left side tensioner upgraded, or see what size socket fits the left tensioner 17mm head, old job, 15mm socket is the upgraded one.
An easy fix if its the old job, I did mine a couple of years ago, I disliked that rattle.

You need a set of ear plugs:thumb2

Probably fine, but now you've posted on here about it,I'll give you 15 quid for it.

chain tensioner

sitting on the bike the left hand cylinder has a chain tensioner between the cylinder and engine block in front of the throttle body this has been modified my bike used to have a rattle for split sec on start up
got the part from motorworks really quite now easy to fit if this helps

I know what you mean, I had a couple of short local trips so I left the earplugs in my pocket, JEEZUS! it sounds like a bag of spanners in a cement mixer, everything is good, just dont forget the earplugs

cam chain tensioner for the first one. if it was the big ends knocking put in gear stick the brakes on and slip the clutch to put the engine under load if the big ends are ballsed they will knock like a twat when under load . the clacking could be a simple balance and could be a throttle body rattling

Find someone local with the same bike and compare the engine noises (I have an 1150 and if you're not used to the engine noises it can sound quite alarming). If they're similar nothing to worry about.......if not get a good mechanic to listen to it.

Contrary to popular belief BMW engines sometimes need major work "early doors". Not often but it could be a manufacturing thing or a demo bike which ran low on oil. If it was rebuilt correctly it should be fine. There will be a few out there with no owner knowledge...

Air cooled twins are noisy, especially after some antiseptic watercooled multi but they are generally strong and the noise becomes "character" with more use:D

Take the bike for a long ride. I always feel better about reliability after a 2k trouble free trip:D:D

Good luck...

ignore and enjoy

Bought mine with 22000 miles on, it rattled then and rattles now with 101,000 miles on. It used to bother me but lifes too short.

Just ignore it and enjoy it.

Every Tossers opinion?
Got a bit of a wait then judging by the deluge of responses so far.
If your earplugs still allow you to hear the rattles I suggest getting some ear monitors instead. :thumb2
