Everywhere and nowhere baby!
I have to start with stating how awkward I find Garmin products to use. That's almost certainly me being a numpty however, ....

I am trying to update my maps and get 10 minutes in and get a red banner across the app telling me there is an error installing the update. I have selected the region of Northern Europe as I want the UK, France and Spain. I'd like more of Europe too but will settle for Norther.

Am I short on memory for this download? If so, should it not flag this as the issue?

I am on a Mac (Book Air) if that makes a difference.

Got to say, I always have a problem trying to use Garmin when planning a route, no matter the number of times I watch the tutorials. There's always something that you need to know or several ways of doing the same thing that confuses the hell out of me. I just want to plan a simple route, using the piece of string via various towns and cities. Why is it so awkward?

Any body know of a class I can actually attend, with my device and laptop to get the basics???

Thanks you.

Have you got sufficient memory in the device i.e a seperate card ?

Try installing to the mac separately to the device and then do the device

It is in the advanced options on garmin express

The other thing if you are using mac book is to download the Garmin installer app from the app store as sometimes mac wont just do it from G Express

I just took the micro SD card out and it's an "integral micro SD Adapter". I think I bought it as an additional to give me extra memory but that was some time ago.??? On close inspection, it's cracked!

Could be the problem.

I tried installing the maps to the Mac only but that also threw up a problem. I'm at the point of throwing in the towel with Garmin.

yes its big enough but depending on what device you have it maybe to big

I've been through a few growing/learning pains over the last few days with map updates, and I've successfully achieved everything this morning, so here's what I have done...

> Ensured my garmin account was still live & that my registered zumo 660 was still there...it was so all good
> Installed both basecamp & garmin express onto the macbook air.....successfully achieved
> I bought a downloadable version of lifetime maps via my garmin account (in hindsight, it would have been easier to do this thru garmin express but I wasn't overly familiar with the express software...I am now!!)
> I installed an 8GB micro SD card in case extra memory space was required
> Connected the zumo 660 to the macbook
> Logged into garmin express to activate & install my maps purchase; express immediately recognised the SD card and would update the maps
> Followed the instructions to commence down load of files & subsequent installation of lifetime maps
> 1 hour & 40 mins later......a successful download & installation
> Checked the zumo to see which map version had been installed.....Europe NT 2016.20

It's a BMW Motored 550
Software Version 5.00

Just tried it with a PC and got a bit further but then fucked up when I tried to download/upload to the device! Fuck fuck fuck bastard fucking cunting fucker twat bollox.

I' m going in to town to buy a new SD card, without it being micro with adapter and I'll get a 8GB one this time. Fuck.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

How on this planet did you purchase Lifetime Maps??? I'm in my account and spent 20 minutes searching for it so I can do the same.

I bought it on Friday through 'MyGarmin' account.

> Plugged my zumo into the macbook air
> Logged into MyGarmin
> There are 5 tabs across the top: Home / myProducts / myMaps / myExtras / mySupport
> Clicked on Home - clicked on manage maps (you can just click on the myMaps tab)
> Here it tells you what map version you have, and that updates are available
> I clicked on the button to take me to the map options & selected lifetime maps
> Once the purchase was made, I then received an e mail confirming my purchase, then a second e mail confirming the download was available

It was at this point I hit a wall, as I could see the map download in MyGarmin account, but couldn't activate or access it; enter Garmin Express!!

> I had already loaded the Garmin Express software, but needed to sign into the account (used the same log in info as per MyGarmin account)
> Once I had signed in, my maps purchase appeared & the button next to it said 'activate'
> Clicked on 'activate' and then it began installing files, and then the timeline bar appeared indicating 1 hr 40 minutes for completion

Aha! nuMaps Lifetime Europe. That has to be it for £74.99.

If I buy this, I'm lumbered with Garmin. Hmmmm .....

The lifetime maps is device specific, so if you sell the garmin the lifetime maps goes with it......

Skippy I feel your pain............ I've only ever had Garmin sat nav's and like you have had nothing but difficulty with them. My concern though is are any of the others any better ? I'm currently creating routes in Basecamp for an upcoming trip to Austria and have so far managed to send 3 of them to my unit. Every time I come back to it after a switch off, and click on the basecamp icon, I get the set-up wizzard prompting me to install basecamp, which I do, then it comes up with a dialogue box telling me there has been an install error and it crashes out. I have to uninstall basecamp and Garmin express, then re-install them from scratch again to continue past this point. But when I do, it recognises me and still has my saved data. :nenau Not easy enough to use, and too expensive for the bin !

Can I create a route on my Mac, independently of the device and then download to the device once I'm happy with it? Or, do I have to have the device connected in order to be able to see the detailed maps.

This is so frustrating it's absurd.

That rather depends on wether you downloaded the new maps to your computer and your device or just your device, if it was just the device then it will need to be connected to your computer so basecamp can use the maps on it.

When a new map is available I always install to my computer only first and then use <a href="http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231" target="_blank">this</a> method to download the maps to my device.
It works very well with my 550 and a friends 660.

It's worth keeping trying with basecamp as a big advantage is that unlike Tyre or Google maps based programs you don't need an internet connection to use it as the maps are on board.

Have you checked your maps you are using in Basecamp - if your Map says Global Map it is a very basic map set - you can select the NT 2017.1 versions and all should be ok for planning without the device connected - this is unless you haven't downloaded the maps to your Mac.

One thing you will find is that your Mac will store old map versions taking up loads of space - use a program like Omnidiscsweeper to free up space - I do this with the Mac very few months anyway to keep it fresh - it's not like a Windows computer that lets you know it's getting full by running like a snail.

This is what I have installed previously ....

Installed Maps:

City Navigator Europe NT 2009, Deluxe All Regions, Aug. 08
Code: 11Gxxxx
Unlock Code: U3BEHAAK3A4NN6Xxxxxxxxxxxx
Date Unlocked: April 28, 2009

City Navigator Europe NT 2015.40 - Map+P,February 15
Code: U8A2xxxx
Unlock Code: 7RQ6KB42JV4QQxxxxxxxxxxxx
Date Unlocked: May 10, 2015

I'm in the web store now and want to update. I bet it fails to do so again. :nenau:nenau I also want to see the maps on my Mac without having the device linked to it. Can I? :nenau

Yes, you can see the maps on your Mac, without having the device connected. It's easy... But from memory

Connect the device.... You have to do this.

Open I think it is, Garmin Express

Select update maps but select 'Just to computer'.

Install maps

Eject device

Job done

Yes Wapping is right - the device needs to be connected because it reads the codes to say you have Lifetime maps - or a specific map update.

Use Garmin Express - this always tends to give me a few warnings about versions and compatibility etc - it still works fine for me I think it is just an ios compatibility problem.

If it doesnt give you the option of installing Maps to separate destinations then look for the "advanced" install option on the screen somewhere and it should then give you the option of destinations.

You are running an old map set there - but eventually when the download is complete and the device is unplugged you need to Close the program (Completely using Comd + Q) then open you basecamp again - this will probably still open in "Global Maps" so then go to the top centre screen where it says Global Maps and click the dropdown box and your equivilent map set should be listed in there - click it and it should then show more detailed maps on screen without the device selected.

Thanks Wapping.

Turns out, it's not me (as usual)! Having tried all that and more without success, I called the Garmin help line. They were very good, patient and helpful, taking me through each step, including deleting all Garmin apps and reloading. Nothing, it still will not do what I need it to do and Garmin could only offer advice I try with my (Windoze) laptop and see how I get on.

I maintain, it's awkward and confusing (for me anyway) and even Garmin said it isn't easy until you get the hang of it after practising for a while.

Oh FFS! I just read through your thread Richard. I'm not alone by the look of it! I feel so much better about myself now. :D
