Ok, I'm being sucked into the Garmin world and need some maps, are they really as expensive as their website suggest or is there another way. Topo for UK and Eire would be a start but that's a total of £500 for 1:50k and 1:25k just for UK. I've found a free map "TrekMap Italia v6 PRO, Abruzzo" from Garmin and have installed on device but can't yet bring it back to the PC.

Berin, do you have Topo maps for much of continental europe and how did you get it.

=======

I have started you a fresh thread and given it, I hope, an appropriate title.

I have Garmin topo maps, which came with the Montana devices.

I also use these, https://gravelmaps.de/
they can be installed on the computer as well as the device. To get round the Garmin 4gb limit I download the gmap version of the maps and then create a map set for the region i want using map manager.

Talky toaster also do some decent maps, not free but only a few quid, and he’ll make a custom map for you.

There also the general OSM maps, hosted on a changing variety of servers, just google to see which is current

Hope that helps

Thank you both, I'll have a look.

If it's for Garmin take your pick.

I've had good results with Friezekarte and Alternativaslibre, on Garmin devices and have made my own custom maps for garmin using Mkmap and splitter (which are free java command line utilities which work on win mac and linux.)

Overview of getting OSM maps onto Garmin devices here.

For a worldwide solution on the cheap that works on a phone try OSMand+ for a £10 a year. Fantastic coverage and functionality just a very steep learning curve.

If you have other Garmin devices, such as a smartwatch. Look at the Garmin Explore App. You get free maps through there, through which you can plan routes, mark way points etc.

It has options for topo, satellite & basemap/basecamp map versions. And can add in detail such as Garmin terrain, contours & relief shadows, and hiking paths.

No luck in my search so far, the only UK option for OS 1:50/25k maps seems to be from Garmin and that seems much the same for the rest of the world at the detail I require.
It's probably a bit academic though as GPSMAP screen just isn't big enough for moto use with the maps I have downloaded and I'm not buying another device.
Thanks again for all the suggestions.
