Just stppped, works ok but stuck on Google, the button for changing sites only partially works. It turns on ok but all you can get is google and the key board doesn’t appear. This pad is about seven years old and is used a lot.,is this a dustbin job any advice or commiserations gratefully received. Doing this on shmbo,s iPad took me all the after noon to get google up .

Dumb question but have you done all the updates. If the IOS is up to date you can always try a total reset.

Hard restart, try a simple reboot, but if that fails I think there is a deeper restart.

Everything in life is better after a good reboot.

If it’s actually fucked I have one lying around. Might be 7 years old might b older. Most apps won’t load. You’re welcome to it if you want it. JJH

Have you tried shutting it/them down and restarting it/them?

Try spraying the screen with a screen cleaning solution.

My ipad played up in the top left of the screen, a good clean/degrease fixed it.

Might have been some chemicals from work on my hands or something that made it unresponsive, turned out to be an easy fix for me.

I’m no expert but, my iPads don’t seem to last much more than 5 years before they won’t accept software updates. Apologies if this has already been said.

A little bit harsh. They are still very useful. Many apps still work without being updated. Ultimately they are going to be less and less useful but for someone who doesn’t need to constantly upgrade to the latest version of the app they are still useful. Obviously at some stage the older they get the less useful they are. Seems a shame. Planned obsolescence. JJH

Tell us EXACTLY what you mean by 'I cannot get out of google'.... google what?
Do you mean the Google website via a browser? Google Chrome? Google images etc etc. What are you trying to get out of?

Have you tried shutting it down and restarting it?

Depending on which iPad you have do one of the following:-
  • Press and hold the power button and volume up button together until the screen goes black, then wait 30 seconds then press and hold the power button to turn it on.
  • Press and hold the power button and the home button (the one that reads your finger print) together until the screen goes black, then wait 30 seconds then press and hold the power button to turn it on.
Once it restarts tell us what you see.

The janitor has many powers, granted to him by ‘Them’.

Either that or it’s evidence (if any were needed) that UKGSer is really very good at being helpful on a vast range of topics, when it puts its collective mind to it.

I did ent realise how much I depended on the thing,
...on the basis of that statement, may I strongly recommend that you back the thing up right now then :D

Either to your computer or to iCloud but do it now.

That way, if it goes belly up completely you can just buy a replacement and upload all of your backed up stuff right on to it and be up and running in half an hour.

Oh, and it's worth doing an encrypted backup (basically the same but you'll need to remember the password if you ever need to restore it to a new device). This allows for backup of some of the more sensitive data and I'd generally recommend it.
