I test rode the Africa Twin.

Good report, though you didn't need to start a new thread as there is already a 19 page thread on test rides !! :blast

Good luck in getting the bike in a few weeks.I ordered mine last year and delivery has now slipped to end March !

You liked it more than your GSA, is your GSA an LC or earlier model?

From the blog page looks like he traded a sand rover TC GSA

Looks small with your mate on it , must say I found it small when I had a sit on one

I'd compare it more to a GS800 or an old Tiger

Hope you enjoy it :thumb

Tried it out today. A bit parky and ended up with numb fingers for the first time in years. Not sure if the heated grips were on max or not. Was not able to explore the various riding modes much due to greasy wet salty roads. What there was suggested a smooth lump of an engine with a nice even torque delivery. Arms remained in sockets but acceleration was acceptable me anyway. Fuelling seemed a wee bit abrupt in cut off in the lower gears especially. I expect I would get used to that.

Riding position was great, pretty much perfect for my size (6 foot) and there was very little in the way of wind blast or buffeting. I was surprised by the lack of fork dive. Being used to the telelever, I was expecting this but zip nada.

Brakes seems a bit wooden: did the job but not dramatically good. Maybe I was being a bit too canny in the conditions.

What impressed me most was the apparent lack of weight. I knew it was there but buggered if it showed itself at any time. I could have been riding a 250! Low speed manoeuvres were a doddle!

Very nice bike.

I test drove the Africa twin

I fancy a new bike, and cant afford a new BM{possible reliability issues aside}so like many on here got a test drive on an Africa twin.
Took the bike out from Newcastle Honda--thanks to them!

Current bikes 2009 1200GS and 1999 Kawasaki klr 650.
Me 60, 5ft/9, 30inch inside seam, weight 174 lbs

weather 2 degs sunny, roads a/B/motorway heavily salted and agricultural mess.

Throttle very responsive
Gearbox light precise

Handling As others have said, it doesn't feel heavy and combined with the throttle response it seems spritely.
I turns easily in a road width, and is well balanced for slow manoeuvres
Generally it handles well, but I would probably be wary coming down off a mountain where speed mounts and massive front braking was required. Standard tyres were good.
I found the brakes fine, and less fork dive than expected. Stability in corners was good, but I didn't hit an unexpected pothole---something the gs is great at dealing with.
At speed I found the bike ultra stable straight into 3 figures, better than the GS, but it had no luggage fitted, so that could change.

Weather protection The bike is narrow, including the fairing and screen, so although it is good, in the ultimate comparison, on long motorway journeys is not as good a GS, and imagine it would cause greater fatigue. Having said that it was good and more than adequate for me. I did notice a small wind vibration to my helmet travelling in certain directions---I would have to cure this .I did not try to alter the screen as time was running out

Ergonomics Riding position excellent
On the pegs excellent
Seat was hard (ok for the 2hrs I was on it)but comfortable, and there was plenty of room
Controls all good except for the indicator switch, which is just below the horn, and with winter gloves on I kept sounding off on corners.
The dash I found hard to read even with glasses on----an age thing maybe, but would probably get used to it when more familiar.
I found the heated grips perfectly adequate, they weren't hot, but it was cold and they did their job.
Vision around narrow fairing and screen good.

Performance I can only compare this to my 2009 GS, and I have never ridden a twin cam or WC.
Rapid up to 100.
Cruising in the low 90's, still loads of poke for overtaking, one squirt and you are in 3 figures.
On the twisties and B roads, no problem with acceleration anywhere, loads of torque, and a great sound. As this was a test drive, and I was trying to find weakness's, I was operating at speeds and acceleration well above my normal riding style, and I didn't find any!
This bike appears to be faster than my GS.

Conclusion The Africa twin is a hoot to drive, and where ever you are it just wants to go, it has the grin factor!

For me, a solo rider, it has more than enough power, and although its motorway comfort may be below the GS, its other features and price make it worthy of a whirl this time around, I will be buying one, only choice is manual or DCT

I'd rather have the Honda bat mobile scooter I saw today . It looks mental . The AT looked a bit shoddy , already corroding with 89 miles on the clock

Africa twin

Thanks Robbo,

will keep a look out for this, would be good to know where to look!

In the early stages this can be a problem. I have never had a problem with the 1200's, but when I was looking for my 800, every demonstrator I looked at had corrosion problems, and when I finally got one, had problems with numerous parts. Local BM dealer was excellent, but BM itself not so good. Hope there are not too many problems.

Thanks

Bill

I didn't think Hondas corroded.:nenau

It was parked next to a Tosser on a GS who had taken the blinkers off and popped in to test it out.Meanwhile the wind blew corrosion off the Toilet Bike on to the Future Numero Uno Machino !!

Do you ever stop, the AT is a nice bike, but it's not No1....................no bike is No.1 as everyone's views on their best bike are different

He's had over 50 bikes you know and all were number 1 at the time. Most of them probably clocked up their mileage travelling to the showrooms to purchase the next new shiny thing.
