Can someone tell me if it is possible to send a selection of tunes from i-tunes to an sd card (to then insert into the 550), i have no experience with i-tunes but i have been told that you have to download the full list of tunes that you have stored in your i-tunes and cannot just download the ones you require is this true !

Yes you can and no its not true.

There may be a clever way of doing it but I just went to 'My Music', found the Itunes folder, found the music folders I was interested in, made sure they were in MP3 format (they might not be but you can change them if not), get your SD card (make sure its formatted to FAT32), copy the music files you want to the SD card.

Done

You can't if your i-Tunes were bought via the website as they won't be in MP3 format.

Also if you sampled CD's using i-Tunes then the default is M4A format which is also not compatible. You can customise the CD import function to use the MP3 encoder - but you will have to re-import all your CD's to get them to MP3 format.

One further thing to be aware of (and I have not tested this just read about it) - don't put more than 100 mp3 files in a folder on the SD card as I think it will not show them to you on the Garmin

Thanks for quick reply, can you please advise how i can check that the music files are formated to MP3 and change if required, and also how to check/format the sd card.

i would imagine if you right click on a file and look at its properties it will have the suffix .mp3 at the end?

The music files seem to be in MPEG-4 format can anyone tell me how to change them to MP3, also how to check/change the SD card format.

Here are a few more tips, having just converted, copied, etc from i-tunes:

1) i-tunes can convert most files to mp3, but not protected AAC (i-tunes downloads).

2)when you have i-tunes open and the list of songs in yoor library, right click on the grey bar betweenn the list of songs and the genre/album/artist list, if you ckilck on 'kind', it will show you what format your songs are in.

3) when you decide which songs you want (you can put then into a playlist as you pick and choose or selct and hold ctrl to select the next song etc), when you have finished selecting, right click on one of the selected tracks and copy, go to your SD card and select paste.

Hope this helps, it worked for me.

Can anyone tell me how to convert the none protected AAC songs to MP3 format.

highlight your tunes, then right click and select 'Convert Selection to mp3', then sit back and wait

When i ask it to show kind, my tunes show as type "AAC audio file"
when i right click on a tune i only get an option which says "Convert Selection to AAC"
Can't seem to get a "Convert Selection To MP3 option" ?

In i-tunes go to the 'Edit' menu, select 'Preferences' and then the 'Advanced' tab and then 'Importing', now look for 'import using' and the drop down menu select MP3 Encoder. After that when you go back to your i-tunes library and right click a track the option should be 'convert to MP3'.
