ICELAND - A game of three halves

Fed and watered so back to the tent it's about midday now so the rest of the day to kill. Fish museum Tim G said yesterday when we got here, a museum about fish! No !! It's a museum about one type of fish the Herring!! right, lets get this straight, there's a museum about herring? yes, not just that, it's spread over three different buildings. So off I go, walking along I think to myself so my life has come to this I'm going to a museum about fish ! Sorry Herring, there must be a bar open somewhere? No Mark be positive, you're in Iceland to see things, so go and see something. So I did.

I was in there close to 3 hours, what a fantastic place, so much information and so much human history, I won't bang on about it as it's all been said before but the biggest thing that struck me was that in the 1960's fish and fish products were over 90% of Iceland's exports, in 2006 marine products constituted 51.2% of all exports.
 
Not because we needed it Cabby - there was a day of celebrations in the town the next day, with free fishing trips through the day etc, so we decided to stay on and take advantage of it - and catch lots of these :beerjug:

July 24th. Day 4. I had a great sleep, no snoring I notice unlike the first camp. All ablutions done, ready for the day. Mark is almost ready but I'm not sure for what. This scene becomes normal every morning, but it's still scary.

In fact Mark is worried about his chain, there's not much adjustment left if any, more on that later.

Off we trot to Husavick, some interesting tunnels on the way, one decent off road track, but most importantly photos!!!!

We get to camp site & pitch the tents, Husavik is not a bad little town, seems to have everything you'd want, bars, takeaways, restaurants, fuel and swimming baths. I'm sitting outside my tent eating a spicy sausage, feeling a bit low when Tim G comes over and asks if I'd like to ride to the top of that mountain, well I couldn't zip my tent fast enough. Boy what a ride, up to the top was good, back down was a challenge then we went inland some way to find a lake we could see, the trail hadn't been used for a while and was overgrown and rocky as hell, after about 20 mins I though my god I hope Tim stops for a smoke I'm knackered now !! he finally stops, I'm sweating like a pig as the ride was so hard, Tim looks like he's just stepped out the tent, not out of breath not sweating just as calm as you like. We have a drink of water and Tim finishes his smoke and he says do you want to keep going or turn back and go to the beach? Yes! I think a get out ! The beach I say a little too keenly, so we turn the bikes round and back we go, to me it didn't seem as bad on the way back (is it the mind doing that trick again?), we take a slightly different route where we encounter some very fast sheep (35mph) and Tim almost comes a cropper crossing a massive rut, if it had have been anyone else they would have lost it for sure.

Tim finds a small track that leads to a track running parallel with the beach, I see a route onto the sand and head for it, the sand is so soft I have to keep revs up and positive power just to keep moving, I have a little wiz about then stop to take a couple of pictures, bike starts to sink the second I stop, some very quick pics and I'm off that sand as fast as I can. Before I went onto the beach Tim did say he wasn't going on just in case he got stuck, I'm not sure what his response would have been if I had gone and got myself stuck on that beach ?

Thanks Tim for that you could have easily just had your coffee. At the end of that little ride I knew this trip was going to be a lot better as we went on. Tim pushed me hard in that short space of time and it wouldn't be the only time either. Cheer again Tim !!
