Has anyone been to Iceland ? Any info would be cool. I can only find one ferry company , or am i missing somthing ? If you have a large reply please feel free to email me direct.

In 1998 I've been to Iceland, two-up on a R1100GS, together with my sister on her R65 and her boyfriend on his (now mine :D ) Dominator.
We choose to take the saturday ferry Hanstholm-Seydisfjordur (Smirril-Line), which with a 1 1/2 day stop at the Faroer brings you Iceland on friday.. On the way back you have a direct 52hour trip... The alternative was freighting the bikes to Reykjavik and fly to Kevlavik, which we didnot like very much because of the extra trouble and organisation.

To discribe our holliday on Iceland in short: FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
One moment you think you're looking at the beginning of the world the other moment you look at the world how it must be after WW III....

Some keywords:
a lot of offroading, whale watching, swimming in a warm river with -1 outside temp, glaciers ....

If interested, with help of my sister I can compile a bit more detailed story of this trip, she wrote a multi page article of our trip for Moto '73, and another one of her second trip to Iceland last year...

Landmannalaugar, I think the most unearthly landscape I've ever seen in my life...
At the camping place a hot and a cold river come together, creating a very big hottub, where all travellers meet at night...

Fly???

Zwerver , many thanks for your reply, it just makes me want to go even more. The only problem i have is time. To this end i might have to look into flying my bike out. Any idea how/who to do this ?

Ian

Ian,

Helge Pedersen wrote a very interesting travelstory about Iceland by mc.

Because I haven't got back an answer from my friends about the freightforwarders I've been browsing the net for some info for you...

The Dutch Iceland Specialist offers mc-transport by container-ship from Rotterdam,
working together with the Icelandic freightforwarder , Samskip (English site) which also ports at Immingham every Monday.

Other interesting links can be found at ijsland.pagina.nl (mostly in Dutch)

Hope this info will help you planning your trip to the ultimate GS-country!
