Appologies if this is a stupid question.
I have a 2001 1150GS & I am wondering what the idiot (telltail, as BMW call them) sequence should be.
When I turn on ignition & deactivate imobiliser, only the neutral light & ABS lights illuminate (ABS flash together until moving off). Oh, and the RID lights up.
I would have thought that Low fuel, Battery & oil pressure warning lights would illuminate until engine started. In order to let one know that they are functional.
With engine running, indicator & high beam warning lights operate fine.
I ask because the owners manual states that when you get to 2 bars on the RID fuel level meter, that you are on the reserve 4 litres & that the orange fuel light should come on. The other day I took the fuel level as low as 1 bar & the orange light did not come on.

Is this normal ? Please illuminate me (scuse the pun) oh wise ones.

If not normal, any suggestions on how to trace/cure the problem.

Thanks in advance
Paul.

If you are saying you don't have a oil and battery light illuminated with ignition on, engine not running, you should have! What the cause is, I don't know. So not much help really! :augie

Oil light and low fuel light, and the brake light, are protected by fuse 1, 4A rating, nearest the outside of the bike. If the brake light shorts this fuse blows.

Check the bulb first, just in case the short is still there, although in most cases the short occurs just as the bulb fails.

When I turn on ignition & deactivate imobiliser,

I presume you mean engine kill switch? With that switched to 'no run' you should get oil, battery, neutral and flashing abs lights. switching to run simply powers up motronic & fuel pp. try shugie's suggestion, but i think you may be looking at more than one problem. my fuel light doesn't come on until sometime after one bar is showing, it depends on how the float rod is bent, fuel sender potentiometer and low level switch are next to each other in the tank. there is a way of testing the fuel light and dial damping relay posted here:

Thanks

Thanks to all who replied.
I have just returned from my holidays in Norfolk so have not had time to try your suggestions, but will soon.

BTW Norfolk appears very bike friendly & has some lovely roads.

Problem solved, sort of.

Checked fuse 1, & it is ok.

Let fuel run low & tipped bike over on side stand, started up & orange fuel light came on.

Left electrical equip on with engine stopped to drain battery low, & battery warning light illuminated.

Have not checked oil pressure light (dont want to run engine with low oil) but , in light of other tell tail light functionality) I will assume it to be working.

I can only presume that the failure of these lights to illuminate, with ignition on, but engine stopped (as is normal on all other vehicles I have owned), must be an idiosyncricity of my wiring, perhaps caused by the meta alarm/immobiliser, fitted by a previous owner.

BTW love this forum, excellent knowledge base that beats any manual. speaking of which, which are the better published manuals Haynes or Clymer ?
