Ignition key turned itself off!

I had been travelling for about 15 miles yesterday and been following traffic in the outer lane of a dual carriageway when the car in front pulled over and gave me the chance to pull away.

I opened the throttle to test the acceleration of the newly de-cat exhaust. The bike pulled very well to a speed I will not post on this forum when everything cut out.

I coasted over to the side of the road and before stopping realised the ignition key had switched it self off. Switched on and all fine again.

Bike is 2005 with only 16K miles (I know I need to get out more).

Has this happened to others?

Any advice to prevent this happening again?

You have probably got a bunch of things attached to the ignition key.... Alarm fob, house key, U-lock key, fob from 'The Ace', novelty furry animal and / or a load of similar tat.

The vibrations (and weight) jiggled the key around in the (possibly) worn lock and bingo!

Just a guess mind.

There was definitely increased vibration, to be expected on a twin at speed.

I thought about the key ring but there is not much weight only a Givi key and a rubber fob from Rainbow.

The barrel is probably worn; I assume you are not the first owner?

The last bods who loved it, probably had all the paraphernalia mentioned above.

Mine did the same while i was overtaking a coach, the wind blast from the front of the coach switched it off.

Yep, been there, playing around on traffic light grand prix...

Turning the key all the way round stops it.

Happened to me too - on the outside lane of the M40, in the dying light so was not happy to be rapidly slowing down, trying to cross the traffic, with no lights on!

Always switch right round to the fully on position, otherwise the bike works at the 95% on position until the problem you have occurs.

Thanks for the replies.

I made sure the key was fully over for my ride today and there was no problem.

It will certainly be checked before each ride and will be pricing up a new lock.

Put a cheap carabena on the key ring. Unclip the ignition key and put the others in a pocket or top box. No scratches on the triple clamp and no weight on the ignition lock.
