Hi

My recently acquired 100k mile 100RT refused to start the other day... It had been slightly misfiring on start up which I put down to the choke set-up in the carb needing a sort but this is a no spark issue...

The bike has had a fairly recent new coil and the coil is getting voltage, the ignition module is also getting voltage and the front cover is off and there are no trapped wires to the Halls Effect sensor... After many years of boxer twins i may had had my 1st Halls Effect failure??

The day before it had been harder to start and had a couple of misfires when running and then total spark failure... Am i on the right path? Is there any more in depth way to check the HES... Also Rob Farmer has been mentioned in a previous thread as the man to get sensors from if you fancy a HES rebuild...?:)

Battery is OK and the ignition switch and kill switch seem OK and everything else is operating....

Thanks in advance...:thumb

Thats the only breakdown I had on my own 100k r100rt.

If you get a spark when you turn the ignition on and off but none when you spin it over, chances are its the hall sensor in the bean can at fault.

As Casper says try flicking the ignition kill switch a few times.

Those hall sensors I had were a one off. There was a minimum order involved when ordering one from the states so I thought I'd offer them up here. Needless to say there were moans about the price (even though it was at actual cost). Requests for bulk discount (two was the bulk figure mentioned ) and three non payments. I subsequently learnt my lesson and withdrew the milk of human kindness towards fellow airhead riders :D

I've had total spark failure twice in 80,000mls, first was after the first service by the dealer who got the lead to the bean can trapped behind the front engine cover. The second time was when the bean can itself gave up at 80,000mls.

In the second instance the engine cut out but restarted immediately while at some traffic lights, but it then cut out completely and finally a quarter of a mile later.

Thanks chaps...

I get the impression that 80-100k is about the service limit for the sensor... Bit like a Renault gearbox...

Rob, I sympathise... Promises are not hard cash...

Will check a bit more and get back...

I think Motobins have a sensor already mounted on a plate.Might even have two so you always have a spare.

Not cheap, but cheaper than buggering up the bean can if you , like me , are a ham fisted bodger!

I have checked for a spark operating the kill switch and nothing on either cylinder, even with the plugs cleaned up a bit... Both plugs had a good colour from when it was running...

So my guess is it isn't the HES but possibly the ignition module?? I can't imagine that both of the coil outputs have failed together, on a newish coil but I may be wrong... Not what I have experienced over the years that involves dodgy ignition switches, coils, kill switches, HT leads etc etc but never the ignition box or a crank sensor...

"I have checked for a spark operating the kill switch"

I assume that you had the ignition on.:D

At least you have the 80 to swap bits over and try

Ha, ha...:blast I sold it a few weeks ago...:D And it was running very well:blast

I knew the 100 was going to need a couple of jobs and was definitely a project but it did go well and this prob was unexpected... Just trying to pin it down to stop a £££ lottery...:augie

PS... Yes I did have the ignition on...;) Perhaps it's the sidestand interlock...
