that would be the ignition timinghow do you set the ignition after rebuild???

Nice one john, thanks very much.Tut, tut... its in the same manual you downloaded for the clutch adjustment
Remove plugs and leave the LH one in the pluglead but earthed on the cylinder.
Find the Z mark on the flywheel through the hole near the dipstick. That's the static mark.
Turn beancan (with ignition on) until the plug sparks. That will give you a very basic timing. Then get a strobe and check the dynamic timing (the S mark on flywheel) - or go to a garage for this bit... a car place can do it.

Just had a thought about this timing problem!! could it have something to do with the new clutch I replaced, am I right in thinking the timing marks are on the clutch components and not the flywheel.Tut, tut... its in the same manual you downloaded for the clutch adjustment

....line up the Z and then turn the beancan to get the spark ( not visa versa ) Yup, you are adjusting the engine to suit the timing spark....line up the Z and then turn the beancan to get the spark ( not visa versa )

Now the problem I can NOT get a spark when Z mark is lined up with line on engine case timing mark hole by dipstick.
Yes John, we renewed the timing chain, this was my first thought if the chain is out of line it is possible it would give this problem,. We are 99.9% that the chain was fitted correctly. We also replaced the clutch but DID NOT remove the fly wheel this is why I asked the question regarding the timing marks been on the fly wheel or clutch, we did however fit the pressure plate 120 degrees from the mark as stated in the manual.Have you had the timing chain off?
John
John, already tried that this afternoon and now I am getting the spark. all is well.Quick, before Steptoe comes along... Repeat procedure using the S mark!!!
If you have the PDF manual is page 2.15
