I know there's a 'wanted' section but this is 1200 specific.

I'm aware that a new drive shaft costs a furtune and the UJ's are staked in but to bin a complete shaft unit for a £10 - £15 pair of UJ's seems stupid to me.

I'm looking for a shot shaft unit so I can see if its viable to strip out the old joints and rebuild. There's a company in the USA doing this so why can't we do them here? Unaware of anyone doing this in the UK.

Condition of bearings doesn't matter. Maybe I can work a solution and save us all a fortune in the long run.

Please note... This is the drive shaft and NOT the final drive.

I can't help, but this sounds like a great plan. I'll be very interested in how this turns out.

The rebuilding of transmission shafts with "peined" in U/J caps has been going on with companies withing the UK since before i started my HGV apprenticeship back in the mid 70's

The first thing that needs to be done is to have the old U/J removed so the cap diameter & closed length can be established....Finding the exact replacements will be the challenge.

Finding a company to actually install the U/J will be a doddle, any decent engineering company with a press & mandrels ...or even a heavy duty vise will press them in & out in their sleep

Thats exactly why I need a shot one. I have a supplier that is willing to try and match the UJ's up for me.

Could even have one with a grease nipple! Now thats a bit too "triumph herald" but it cant be that hard.

The originals are staked but theres also an option to circlip them in, I can get that machined in but need one for a "pricing up".

Will need to source UJs first to check cap sizes but the options there.

We used to get them done 3-4 times a year on PTO shaft driven agric implements

U/J's used to snap or blow the bearings regularly and any decent agric engineer could do them in his sleep.

I remember doing some in the workshops at agric college as part of a practical

There is no mystery to it...............farmers never throw away PTO drive shafts, they just rebuild the U/J's

All the ones we worked on had grease nipples and circlips as standard:thumb

are you aiming at GS's only? doesnt seem to be many reports on here of problems, would be handy to do, just not sure if you will make much ?
 
At the moment its a 1200 plan, purely selfish plan really as a 2009 GSA owner with well over 40,000 on the clock.

It wont cost me anything bar time and effort and if it saves me a few hundred I dont mind passing on the info or even doing it as a service. I'm lucky to have a lathe and a small milling machine at home so I 'tinker' in my spare time. This is most certainly NOT a money making venture.

There's been a few shaft (UJ) failures, very low numbers but 40k seems a failure point for many. There arent that many bikes with big mileages, they're the exception as opposed to the rule. Front UJs are reported to fail more than the rears, unsure why though. There does appear a lot more angular deflection in the fronts I suppose so grease overheating and associated damage is more likely. As time moves on and average mileages increase there will probably be more demand.

If there's nothing available I may just strip my shaft out and do the measurements.....unable to do all without removing caps though. Didn't fancy stripping and effectively wrecking a serviceable UJ only to find I cant replace it..... it becomes a costly excercise doing it that way hence the request for a scapper.

http://www.pixum.co.uk/slide/5885051 Hi, had UV joint bearing fail last September... the symptoms of a failing bearing are hard to spot, by the time you realized you've got a problem it's to late and the joints damage beyond repair...
 
I have one. It is fairly shot where the bearings collapsed; but if I understand what you are asking for there should be enough for you get an idea of the task.

It has been sitting around outside the shed fpr a while, so it isn't pretty...
 
Are you sorted yet?

I have the front end of one from an 1150 which is still complete but is just about locked in one direction.

I may even be able to drop it off sometime if you'll show me your lathe. :thumb
 
Was looking at 1200s only really. If youre ever in the sunny Black Country your welcome to 'see my lathe' even have a go if you want, can always find a bit of metal to have a bash at!

I wouldn't have found this fault if I hadn't been removing the gearbox but I'm glad I did before anything went bang.

If you need something to practise on (the drive shaft that is :rolleyes:) just let me know. :thumb2
