im missing the harley

problem is my last cheap project started out as a £250 xs 650,but morphed into a £6500 sportser chop:blast.
i know if i go for a sportster again and i do like them a lot i dont want to get sucked into a big (ish ) money pit especially as im such a tart about things

Have a look at sledheadbobbers.co.uk

They seem very knowledgable and will build a customised sportster for £5.5k if you provide the donor bike or £8.5k if they supply it.

Worth a look.

Trouble is 'bought in' customs don't seem right to me, even if its crap, if that's what YOU built that's fine by me!

Fine.....but have you got the skill and equipment to build a frame? Not many people have . What about a fuel tank? Or a wheel? Set of springers? At what point does build become buy?

A fair point well made:D

I reckon there's a big difference between speccing your own bike and maybe researching and sourcing components, whether you do the build or not, and buying an 'off-the-shelf' custom.

IME even if you bought a frame and a tank etc etc it's very rare that it just bolts together and even if it did, it's still something you designed and created in you're own head.

To go out and buy a custom bike, ready made, off the shelf or from someone elses council garage, and ride it with no significant changes by yourself, seems a bit of a cheat to me, but each to their own.

I do have exceptions, just in case someone wants to give me an Exile in matt silver with big wheels front and back, I promise i'll accept it with grace:D

When your only input is to write the cheque ;)
