I'm on my third windscreen

It's difficult to determine a mode / cracking ratio as I use all of them.

There is a more fundamental problem in so far as we have heavy and large midges here in Scotland !

Yep, after camping for a longweekend at lochy site ft william my then gf got eaten alive.

They didn't touch me though lol

I also lodged a claim under warranty ror a new windscreen. Was told by my dealer herein SA that BMW had apparently redeveloped the brackets for the screen and that they are now bigger than the stock ones. We don't know however when these new brackets will be at hand though. Have you guys maybe heard anything about this?

Not heard anything but my third screen has just started to show a crack radiating out from the top right hand mounting hole - I do lots of miles so maybe these screens have small stress cracks around the mounting holes from new and it takes a while for then to show up?

I nearly always ride with the screen in the fully up position so maybe that adds just enough extra stress to propagate the cracks???.

My current mileage is about 16,700 on my standard 2013 GS.

If the Bolts are over-tightened the screen will crack. Exactly the same thing happened to a few earlier GSAs if I remember correctly. Personally I would use a thread-lock and don't tighten the bolts to the point where the rubber washers compress.

I replaced my standard screen with a tinted GSA screen at around 600 miles and found small cracks around the mounting holes. Fortunately I was at the dealer at the time and pointed out the fault. Dealer has ordered a replacement under warranty.

sounds like theres a manufacturing defect with these screens or they cant cope with the vibration generated by the engine

Brand new mounting brackets at dealers in last couple of days to solve this.

Happy

Might be an idea to fit the Cymarc screen support brackets as it stops the majority of the flexing and flapping of the screen and I'm guessing that's the root cause.

I fitted a set and for £42 they are a good bit of kit.

They are on my list of things to buy for the GSA but the way people seem to be going through screens maybe BMW will make Mark Hooton an offer he cant refuse or buy me a set to save on warranty claims

Yes so it seems but i have spent a bloody fortune at NN and not even got the bike yet so will have to wait untill the piggy bank fills up a bit !

A question (probably a bloody stupid one )

do the screen brace things prevent the screen being adjusted on the move ?

It is not a bolt tightening issue - mine are done up finger tight and a tad more - the dealer who replaced my last screen made sure of that. I suspect that when the holes are 'drilled' or moulded during manufacture some very fine stress fractures are introduced and that they simply grow in normal use.

New screen fitted yesterday - it appears to have redesigned bushes and washers to give better support, hopefully I was wrong in thinking that the problem was with the plastic moulding of the screen. I haven't dismantled it but from what I can see, I can believe that it could well do the job :)
