iMac help ?

My iMac 8, 1 will not boot up.

When I switch it on all that happens is the fan whirs into life at what sounds like full speed. No screen, no nice apple startup sounds, no apple logo on the screen, in fact no screen action at all, nothing else, just the fan.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be the issue ? The last thing that happened was a BSOD when running windows last night and then nada since.

We've had it from new and it has performed perfectly, no issues. Obviously until this morning that is.

I have it booked into the local Apple Genius Bar at the w/e, but I'm keen to get it fixed as soon as. But apart from opening it up, cleaning it out, replacing the HDD and/or ram, I'm not sure where to start ? And ideas ?

If you have the disks the iMac came with, you should be able to boot up by putting the DVD in the drive, when switched on, then switch off by holding the on button until the computer goes off. Switch on again whilst holding the 'd' key on the keyboard.

When it boots up go through the first screen, language IIRC, then in the menu choose disk utilities and try repairing the hard drive.

Someone will be along with better instructions in a mo.

Thanks for that, tried that.

CD in, press D, I can hear the DVD drive spinning. But sadly still bugger all going on the screen. I don't think the HDD is spinning, but I'm not 100% sure,

Interestingly the fan has stopped going crazy now, but now the install disc is stuck in the iMac and still no clue as to the problem.

If you want to eject the disk, restart the computer holding the left mouse key down IIRC.

Sounds like the Genius Bar will be your saviour!

It's a Mac. There is no 'left' mouse button.

My MAC has a left mouse button !

Well the trick with the left mouse button didn't work.

Looks like it will have to wait for the Guinness bar at the w/e.

Magic Mouse? You can configure it in settings for to make it a left\right clicker

Update

forgot to update this thread.

Finally got a call from Apple a few weeks back. The issue was a ram stick, thankfully the 2Gb chip and not the big one.

Somehow this fault wasn't picked up by the senior Apple technician, or the Apple iMac diagnostic software - which apparently reported no fault, so off they went dis-assembling the iMac. So they spent nearly two days taking it apart trying new graphic card, HDD, motherboard etc, before finally come back to considering the Ram.

Upshot is machine is working perfectly and has had some of the interior components refreshed as part of the deal.

But at what a cost ? Normally they would charge by the hour for this sort of thing, or so they informed me. But they only charged me one hour - £24. Result.

For those of you considering an admittedly more expensive Apple product over a non-homebrew Windows desktop, the Apple store informed me that they will honour replacing and fitting any defective components up to 6 years from the date of purchase.

I'm no Apple fanboi, I like their kit, but am very specific about what I get / build / spend, but in this instance I am blown away by the customer service and support I have received from Apple for our Mac.
