I have a 2009 R1200GSA low miles at approx 18.5k owned 3 years with no issues, serviced around 80 miles ago, minor, plugs, oil, oil filter and air filter. Took bike out for a 50 mile ride after service all good. Added Seafoam as read on another forum,it was good for cleaning I injectors etc, again took bike out for around 20 miles, felt a bit perkier. Unfortunately fell ill and didn't go near bike for 2.5 weeks, started it up left it on tick over for approx 10 mins and it died, battery went flat trying to start, this happened 2or 3 times, got advice on another forum, stating that seafoam can draw moisture in the tank and form a film, so topped up with fuel, fully charged battery and she fired up fine, so I thought, started up again running up to temp and got iol on message, then thought engine started making knocking noise, looked in inspection window and it was full while running? Again read it might be overfull, although did 4 ltrs ,with filter? Drained a bit off ,so lower end of the window, topped up to 2/3 rds on the window, started and checked, oil drained from inspection window, YES !! all good, but after 15 mins of running up to temp, engine became noisy and window filled up with oil again whilst running,no warning lights on dash, no faults on moto scan, baffled

Changer oil and filter

Use 20:50 oil & a genuine oil filter

If good, run for 1k miles and then repeat

20:50 oil and genuine filter

They don't like 10:40 in hot weather do a search for the lemon its fucked

You will see and hear what 10:40 sounds like in a hot day

These are air (and oil) cooled engines; running them on the stand doesn't give any air flow so they overheat, as temperature rises so oil viscosity drops. Drain and start again, without the standing still bit.

Surely drain and fill before starting?

Thanks for the info, but the bike is running Castrol power 1 15w-50. 4T ,checked all service paperwork and bar 1 service from Barnstormer BMW, at about 10k who used 10w 50 all oil changes ( another 5) have been with the power 1 oil ? I'll do the search though!
Thanks for your help !

Where is "the lemon it's fucked" searched here, Google and YouTube?

As above. Don't run these air cooled bikes standing still, soon after one bar appears in the guage, either get moving or switch off.

But reading your post, I'm wondering if the the olio valve to the cooler is faulty? Not heard of this before, but it seems odd you see a difference in the sight glass - notably from clear to full while it's hot and running. If the valve closed while it was running, could that account for the full sight glass? Would need to look an oil flow diagram to be clearer on this I guess
