iMovie v Adobe Premier

I've got both the latest iMovie and Adobe Premier 12 on my laptop and this weekend I intend starting to teach myself how to edit.

Now, I'm never gonna turn out ultra professional stuff but the aspiration is to to eventually end up producing stuff that is of fairly high quality.

As I have yet to start down either route does anybody have experiance of both, pros and cons and which is the easiest to use?

iMovie isn't bad premier course are available via youtube, the main thing is to learn the interface what the buttons do and mean iMovie is easier to learn but.... premier is nicer in my opinion.

while can learn the interface being creative and having an idea is more difficult than you think.

learning how to put things in order and keeping the workspace tidy is also important.

you could also try, QT full version, Avid media composer (pro kit) FCP etc.... sony... opus/ grass valley.... there's loads of options

Mmm, I don't underestimate how much there is to learn; creative/technical/craft/software and all at the same time, what can go wrong!

When you say Premier is 'nicer' is that the interface or what it's capable of. I'm prepared to put some effort in but don't want to find out half way through using/learning one of the apps that I'd have been better off with t'other.

Then again, I'm probably over thinking it too much as I guess they are ultimately both good bits of kit (well, good enough for me).

iMovie is a very easy layout, to me it looks like it's for kids.....

Premier is a more pro looking interface with all the tools out and to hand.....

similar to FCP and Avid but they all have subtle differences.... which is the problem once you've learnt a GUI "graphical user interface" it's hard to swap around between them (well I find that cos I'm thick)

everything we do ends up in adobe at some point even stuff we've mastered on Avid or FCP which tells you how useful adobe is, it's not the best for a job but it offers some really clever bits.....

as a film maker some of the bits are a pain.... if you get a chance go to BVE broadcast video expo it's on next week you can see all the toys there

Well, I decide to crack on using Adobe Premier, having mucked around with both I came to the conclusion that iMovie was probably a bit easier to start off with but Premier would be better once I got going.........who knows

Anyway, my first attempt at shooting on a GoPro and then editing is HERE - cheers for the comments Carl

I can understand exactly where you're coming from.

I know GoPro do a free editing programme (GoPro Studio) but I thought I'd read somewhere that you can get an upgraded version which you have to pay for. I can't see it on the GoPro website, but I can swear that I didn't just imagine it.

Imovie or Windows movie maker bla bla, both simplistic solutions that work, most of the time

Hey Andres,

If I bump into you at Cafe Hockley this weekend we can have a chat about Final Cut Pro X. I use it on my Mac and its excellent. A bit like iMovie on steroids but not intimidating to learn with. There are a lot of hidden pro features that you can get into later on.
