Ok so I want a roadcrafter suit from the usa but as I understand it I'll get stung for import duty then vat and courier collection fee on top using the collective wisdom of fellow tossers is there a way around this?
All ideas considered ;)

Do you know anyone in the States? As I understand it, if you could get someone over there to buy it on your behalf and have it mailed to their address, they could then send it to you marked as a GIFT. Or the other way is again to get someone to buy it, get them to remove all original packaging, cut off all price tags, labels etc and get them to send it to you this time marked as USED/SECOND-HAND.

I think this is true but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Take a wee holiday to the States and buy one while you're there :green gri:augie

Getting the timing right can be a problem as Aerostich regularly have a 6 week wait time and unless you have an address where you will be staying in advance it can get complicated, but they will ship to any address you provide them, not that I'm speaking from experience of course. :augie

Customs duty and import VAT are not payable:

  • when the value of the goods is less than £18
  • on gifts with a value of £36 or less

Goods over these limits may be subject to Customs duty and VAT. However, Customs duty is waived if the amount of duty payable is less than £7.

For goods to qualify as a gift they must be sent between two private individuals, for example as a birthday present.

The important thing is the export documntation completed by the person sending the item, as long as the total value is within the above limits the item should slip through at this end. Of course in the case of an item getting damaged or lost in transit your entitlement to compensation will be limited to the declared value. :blast

Sending an item marked used or second hand will not get round duties as it's the value rather than the condition which is assessed.

Customs are aware of this scam and can still hit you with the charge. The only real way is to go get one, but you need to order it in advance or speak to a family / friend or tosser to bring you one back in their luggage. I did this twice whilst living out there.

Remember that most Stichs are made to order so it takes some time to get them.

HTH, Nick

FYI, aerostich won't mark up anything they send out as 2nd hand, a gift or anything else. All above board as they should be! :)
