Improved starting.

Never had a real problem with starting but thought I'd beef things up a bit to see what improvements I could make.

First I made up HD copper multi core starter and earth cables with copper terminals. Use the same type of cable sold for powering in car amps.

Don't attempt to replace the original cables, just run them in parallel but find another earth for your new one as the one on your bike's a bastard to get to.

Result?
Much livelier starting.

But still not quite what I'm looking for hmmmmm .....

Just fitted a new Nippondenso starter motor.

Wow what a difference, bike fires in an instant from cold and the new starter sounds much sweeter and with much less drain on the battery.

So there you go, I didn't have a real problem but my bike is now much improved

My 52k mls bike always starts but turns over VERY slowly even with a new battery, I'm thinking that it might be an idea to fit an upgrade starter and then service the original

How much do you pay for one of these?

My 63k km R1150GS starter started playing up about 2000km ago.
I pulled all apart cleaned and greased, nothing really wrong that I could see with it but its still not right.
I just don't want it to leave me stranded somewhere when least expected.
Could you please post the part number of your Nippondenso starter please.

Wow that's expensive!!

I probably use the starter more than most as I use my bike for instructing, I've been using a cheap after market starter which cost £30 for four years with no problems at all but I wasn't quite happy with both that or the OEM ones.

Im not suggesting anyone go's out and spends that kind of money but at the right price it's very worthwhile.

Yes, I totally agree and have done so several times over the years. What I'm suggesting is my set up is much improved

I'm not surprised. I forget what year/model your bike is but the Motronic, injectors and coils in combination are quite sensitive to the voltage dip when you first touch the starter, especially first start of the day. On my R1150 twin spark I found that the following made a huge difference, bring my cold start time to under one second:

1) new starter (after repairing the old one three times)
2) properly charging the pc680 battery (the stock alternator undercharges AGM batteries)
3) wiring all three ignition coils through a relay, directly to the battery like late model twin-sparks, which have a second load relay for the stick coils (there is a big drop across the key switch that reduces coil voltage)

Also, new lower plugs and new stick coils helped too.

If someone knows where you can get the specific starter mentioned and cheaper than the £264 from motorworks then what's the harm in asking? Not exactly asking to be "spoonfed" now is it? Any fuckwit can google something but if nothing comes up then surely asking the question is the obvious next step. If you're happy spending the £264 then good luck to you. I'd rather get the same product cheaper elsewhere if possible.
Same thing with tyres.

I sure somebody on here sold an unused kit from EuroMotoElectric on this forum about a month ago?
Although this company are a bit far away, they are really helpful and despatch to UK no problem I buy my spare parts for the Valeo starters from them.
