Improved starting.

Every year, I remove my trusty Valeo starter and take it apart. I remove the old grease, old dust and regrease all gears and shaft. Even in a cold morning, it starts within a second.

Yep, some starters do, some don't despite looking after them, yet others are fine for years without being touched.
I've had six 1150s and they've all been slightly different.
A mystery :D

Never had a real problem with starting but thought I'd beef things up a bit to see what improvements I could make.

First I made up HD copper multi core starter and earth cables with copper terminals. Use the same type of cable sold for powering in car amps.

Don't attempt to replace the original cables, just run them in parallel but find another earth for your new one as the one on your bike's a bastard to get to.

Result?
Much livelier starting.

But still not quite what I'm looking for hmmmmm .....

Just fitted a new Nippondenso starter motor.

Wow what a difference, bike fires in an instant from cold and the new starter sounds much sweeter and with much less drain on the battery.

So there you go, I didn't have a real problem but my bike is now much improved :beerjug:

Tim, what make is the original starter on GS1150/A ?

Seem to recall changing my starter on the 89 PD from stock to another make and that was loads better.

Some advice I got from motor works BMW.

It was ages ago and I've slept since then so can't remember makes etc :blast

Valeo...... the glued together one.:blast:D

Now I know not everyone's going to agree with my conclusions and that's because they've always been happy with the OEM ones ....... I've been riding 1150s for 17yrs and not really had a starter problem with Valeos but like you mention with the PD, change to a better starter and only then do you realise how much better they are.
