I need to improve a wifi hotspot at my holiday home abroad. At the moment we have a router next to a window  to allow others access to the signal. I would like to increase the output (power) of the signal to increase the distance that users can be from the router. Is it possible and is it a re mortgage job (expensive) ?

If you raised the power of the router you would also have to raise the power of the laptops, ipads etc that use it.

Buy a repeater......... like these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...=aps&hvadid=7877369809&ref=pd_sl_2zay5371zy_e

But if he has the router by the window, sounds like the other PCs are to be used outside. The repeater will probably need a mains 220V supply. Not so convenient, unless you mount it in a rain sheltered place on the outside of the building, with clear line of site to the PC location for maximum signal strength.

If it has an external aerial connector then put a better one on. Mind you, I found that the rangemax aerial array stuff worked better.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll be there on the 21st and I'll look at the router and see if it has an external aerial connector. Im no good at this type of stuff

somebody will be along in a moment to say this is cobblers but...
a bit of cardboard covered in tin foil behind the ariel angled in the direction you
want....worked for me

Make sure you're using a router the supports the 802.11n standard.

really cheap and quick way is to pop to maplins and a 6db uplift unit about 40 quid, it increases the range of the signal and also has better reception, so that the tiny transmitters in the laptops/pads etc will transmit to it.

or get a US router as it puts out more to start with, the limit on the amount of power put out by the router and the wireless card in what ever is connecting to it is set by law they are all actualy capable of putting out more just not allowed to sell them in the UK, my linksys router from the US has almost twice the "omph" of the Uk version, but is basicaly the same box with the same bits inside.

What router do you have?

Can you sketch the floor plan of the property, and indicate where you want wifi reception to be?

I do wifi system designs using various antennas, repeaters etc to cover an area.

Luke,

if stuck - P.M. me for Og Juniors mobile No. ;)

but he's off to the U.S (on Sunday.... Sept 11th :blast ) to get married - so if possible make it two weeks AFTER that.
