In ear monitors

Well at present, after the 3rd return, so far I have had no problems with my ultimate ear phones and this with being used every day.

However, when I returned mine for the 2nd time I also sent back Jonathans as his weren't working either. He doesn't ride his bike much and on wanting to use them for the first time since they were repaired.......................one of the earphones isn't working.

I've sent them back again today, so let's hope these get fixed in a timely fashion.

When they work, they are brilliant. But the whole quality issue has left a bad taste. Let's hope they've now sorted out this issue and we can all benefit from them.

how are the new armoured ones faring up, cant seem to find the air tube type on the ultimate site, are they still being manufactured :nenau

The new armoured ones are doing fine to date and the airtubes are still being sold though for some reason they have never found their way on to the website.

The airtubes are being re-designed as we speak, similar robust cabling, shorter acoustic tubes than current and mine should be with me shortly.

The re-design should entice more towards them and they will be available as an upgrade from the basic blocker plug too :thumb2

just emailed them, will probably have the moulds done then decide what supplier and type :thumb2

I'm also looking for some new in ear monitors. I've had the UEP 75's for about three months, which (let me not think about this for too long..) - my flatmate decided to use while I was on holiday for the ipod she got at the time. Needless to say, the girl lost them - orange as they were. She loved them - though they can't have fit her properly anyway :nenau. I've still got my molds but haven't yet been able to arrange for a new set and am now looking around for other options.

I really appreciated the softness of the 'newer' material (as i was told) and the perfect fit and I'm not really too worried over the fraying bit of the cables (since the ones I had had clear plastic sleeves over the cables at the plug entry point) and I usually am careful chap anyway - its just that (here is possibly a new point of contention!) I'm used to a Sennheiser set for normal day to day hearing (at reasonable levels!) and found the monitors from UE a little bit on the tinny side (lacked good bass on a standard setting) - but thats obviously personal taste. However, despite having been a bit underwhelmed when I first got them, they seemed up to the job I bought them for - music on the go, while wearing a helmet and canceling out excessive noise, while being comfortable on long journeys.

When it comes to the actual speakers in them - I've often wondered - is there a choice? Is it possible to get a better set of speakers or a differently responding set? I know with ipods I guess you can adjust the sound slightly but if you start with good speakers...

So, I've been looking at ACS - Specsavers do theirs from them - and they are quite pricey as well: top of the range (T1 - £649), upper middle (T2 £499), middle (T3 £229) and lower middle (T15 £129 - with these you can change the ear moldy piece and the actual speakers seem to sit on top -> is this a comfort issue with helmets???). But with all these choices, at Specsaver you can't actually look at a sample until you get them delivered to you. Which is a bit of a downside. I'd also like think it would be perfect if you had some sort of moldable sample that you could test on site for audio response which would make my choice at least simpler.

So, to cut a long story short (you still listening?) - I think its well worth spending this kind of money having had some (short!) experience with the UEs monitors - wish though they came in a bit cheaper. Next wish is a choice of speaker sets and - design is not eveything but accounts for Apples success amongst other things - it would really be cool the get some custom designs put onto them like the ones from UE (US ones). Very cool.

There you go, can't think of anything else and thats a good thing I guess :type

I've had moulded ear plugs from work for the past 7 or so years and they are comfortable enough but I don't use them on the bike as they don't keep out enough noise for me so I decided not to get in ear monitors. Another thing putting me off was all the reports of them not working after a few days/weeks.

I did want the option of sometimes listening to music on the bike so started looking for decent sound isolating in ear speakers and have been using these for the last wee while, sometimes with the ipod, sometimes plugged into the autocom adapter.

All I can say is they are worth the steep (!) price as the sound quality is the best I've ever heard and they are better at sound isolation than moulded ear plugs.

No way would I spend the money on moulded in ear monitors as I find the Q-Jays to be better in every respect and far more versatile.

IMHO

I see what you are saying wully, and they look like good headphones for your personal stereo.

Initially when i started to look I was mainly looking at headphones, or in ear monitors, small enough to fit a helmet over. But while that got me my current Sennheisers (at a similar price to the ones you suggested..) that do fit and are also noise canceling - they are not comfortable enough over long hauls. After an hour or two of wearing these they start to hurt my ears - in the physical sense - which I normally don't get on short journeys.

On top of that, these type in ear monitors simply cannot be as good as custom made molded ones since...ahm, they're not molded to your 'custom'. They cannot seal to your ear shape as well, and therefore noise isolation is not as good even though it does cancel out noise - at least thats what I think.

I've also worn mine (the Sennheiser ones) on longish trips and the noise is definitely more audible as with the custom made ones that feel more like an ear plug to me. And increased outside noise means, you tend to turn up your tunes more (even the bad ones :D) defeating the whole 'turning-it-down-to-not-lose-your-hearing-purpose'.

Been off this site for some considerable time, and whilst I would compliment the UE product, and the helpfulness of Andy, feck me the bitching is still going on. What the feck is the matter with you people, play nicely ffs. Never been on such an unfriendly site in all my life, I'm off again, never to return, so don't waste your time replying with cynical comments, I WILL NOT READ THEM.

I think we can all agree that we've learned a valuable lesson here.....in how to do a good flounce :D

In hindsight i would'nt bother with monitors again, i have the normal moulded things from UE and use them more.

I did notice that the wire was starting to pull out of the LH moulding and consequently gave UE a call.
" they are out of warranty.... we can re wire with the updated kevlar stuff - £45 approx 3 weeks ( Yeah- right!!)
i'll wait til they are really broke b4 spending that ..

BTW ...2 weeks out of 'warranty' ...!!

I have the upgraded ue with the plastic protective covering. There are bare wires visible under the plastic now. They still work but I am just waiting for the enevitable! Bloody shame as they are all day comfortable and IMHO work really well
