As the shaft drive characteristics are new to me .... can someone tell/explain to me that its normal to chug, lag and make an awful racket if you engage 1st gear on centre stand and release the clutch ??

I've had some warranty work done on the drive (new gators) and have never know this reaction to happen with chain drive... Cheers !

Yes, quite normal and pretty much guaranteed to shag your drive shaft if you do it too often.

Now you know , all you need to do is get down the City ground and support Forest. :thumb

Check the angles of the various components on the stand, and then again with the weight on the wheels; you'll see that the unloaded angles are much greater causing the effects you noticed.

Funny that, if I engage first gear on the sidestand my 1150 just rolls forward off the stand when I let the clutch out. No noises no drama.

If you are on the sidestand John, then both wheels are on the ground and you won't have the rear 'hanging', giving you the extreme angles experienced by your bike when it is on the mainstand.

Hi Badger,
I asked the same question (under the New to boxers - thread)
And received clarity from others about the reckless practice.
However I did point out that the promotional videos by Mr BMW show the bike flying through the air on its way to some remote part of the planet presumably with the arm right down and the shaft turning at relatively high speed !
I assume after much of this off-road madness the bike is taken away and rebuilt.
But joking aside I raised the question as I couldn't reconcile engineering and the shafts behaviour :-)
I was assured these apparitions
Are quite normal which is why we have people like 'green flag'.
