For a 2005 R1200GS.

I have one on my bench, seized up.

The usual places don't have any used ones on the shelf.

Anyone got one available for a reasonable price ?

Only the one :D … eBay USA is your friend. Out of the last 5 I’ve needed 3 have come from USA
The client has instructed me to fit a new genuine one. £900 from Germany. Ouch !!

He's had the bike from new. Put 90,000 on her. And keeping it for life.

I'm not getting involved with sourcing second hand parts from overseas. Been there before. Stung !!!!

Well... A new Alternator as of today is £731.56. From BMW main dealer.

Cheapest I found online was £653. But it comes from Germany. They say no extra taxes and charges. But with Brexit being the gift that never stops giving, who knows !!

I'm on the look out for a refurbishment company for the old unit. My client maybe able to recover some of the costs with a refurb and re-sale.

Cheers.

I found one on ebay last week from Italy for £120 all-in (Denso). Look at other model compatibility. Mine was from an RnineT.

As a business, fitting second hand parts generally doesn't work. 50% of used parts I've bought from ebay belonged in the bin. Unless the customer supplys their own parts and accept the risk.

I need to know the parts I fit will last. I don't want to be doing it all again for free. Nor does the customer want to be phoning the AA on his way home from my workshop. It's a faff for all and a double headache for me.

This is an early model Denso 60A. They changed them in 2007 to a Bosche I think. So far less options on the second hand market. They aren't backwards compatible without some wiring adjustments and changing the rotor etc.

Cheers

Not sure what you are saying here? RnineT went up to 2020 with Denso alternators; compatible with my R1200GSA (2010). If the one I got is junk it will go back. No, I'm not a business, so I have the time and I take the risks. If you want one for a 2005 bike on here, you are likely to get offered a secondhand one which is in the same gene pool as all of them on ebay.

I could have got the wrong end of the stick, here.

Maybe it was the RT's and GSA that went to Bosche. I gave up trying to remember stuff like this years ago. Too many bikes. Too many parts.

They did change though. The part number for the one I need is from 2004-2007 on the GS only.

If it was my bike, id do the same as you. Hope yours works out well.

BMW sell the short section of loom so you can fit a Bosch in place of a denso and vice versa, search through the threads, the part number has been posted previously by those that have swooped alternators. Your customers will love you for saving them hundreds of pounds :D

A shame no one is doing recons. In 2016 I had a recon Bosch (OE) alternator fitted to my old BMW E46 330i for under £350. The Labour was £100 of that.

Many years ago (and looking at streetview ) & up until 2019,

there used to be a company behind where i started my foray into employment who re manufactured,

Starter motors, alternators, and dynamo's

(it also helped my best mate at the time worked there :D) - looks like they have gone now

I've only known about 4 places that do re manufacturing of rotating electrics, and the last one stopped doing walk in stuff about 6 years ago.

is it because stuff is getting more reliable? or more difficult to remake?

Most of the generator failures are beyond recon as the cases split open. I have thought that it must be possible to fit a car alternator with a bit of machining of brackets. If I'm really bored I might have a look at that.

I have just encountered the same problem as you, early ND alternator caput from a 2004 gs . All my searches so far have proved negative. If you have solved yours can you share your good fortune?👍🏻
