Having tested an LC last year yesterday I tested 17K's worth of new RT while my 2013 GSA was in for service. I was suprised that my impression of the LC (which frankly I had forgotten) was repeated with the RT. I don't like the fly by wire throttle which sets you off with a huge kick then cuts in to make the delivery more linear as the revs rise. Yes it feels definitely faster than the TC normally ridden but if you whacked open the throttle as much as the electronics do maybe it would be more comparable. The RT was also rougher on the overunn and less smooth around town at 30 mph in 4th than my Hilltop tweeked TC. Gearbox is as clunky as the old K1300GT and tricky to find neutral - definitely a step back from the TC. The wind protection, handling for its weight and suspension ride comfort were the best I have ever ridden.

I then blasted back up the A65 to Cumbria on my TC and found it never once lacking in performance - performance that I enjoyed controlling and not the black box. IMHO much of the satisfaction in owning a bike is the feedback you get when twisting the throttle and for me the grunty precision of the TC wins out over the curious mixture of smoothness and overmanaged delivery on the LC's. There are lots of aspects of the new bikes like riding modes, better suspension, narrow seat, indicators which are improvements over the earlier models and this thread is not principally directed at taking a pop at the LC as opposed to contributing my genuine impressions for other GS owners and recognising how good the TC is for those wondering about the new bike.

I know several people who have gone water cooled and love their new bikes so very good luck to them and enjoy your new bikes but it's not for me.

A TC is indeed a wonderful beast - you're not having mine :thumb

TC GS

:beerjug:I am of a similar vein. I have booked a test ride on the LC on a day my TC is in for service. I am a gs fan through and through and would never consider anything else.
I love the look of the LC but it will have to really impress me to consider exchanging the TC.
I find it a fascinating allrounder and even though I'm only 5 8", find it quite easy to manouver and it just feels right. I must admit that for the first few weeks it feels so tall, for a shortarse, but now I am totally comfortable on it.
However, if I did decide to go for the LC, there is the price to change question, which obviously would be I guess about 6 or 7 grand!

Good man......

I'm just back from the Vines French weekend and it totally confirmed the brilliance of my GSA Triple Black.

I too have ridden the LC and the new RT, neither of which excited me like my GSA (and don't get me started on the appalling 1600 GT)

A long time ago someone imparted the expression "Good enough will do". Last year's technology was the latest thing a year ago and the real bargains are to be had by avoiding buying the latest, hence the £2,000 accessory deal on my T.B. It ended up many thousands cheaper and is a model I actually prefer as well.

Many will choose the new model (as stated by the op) and I also wish them well.

Of course I'd prefer the LC's performance figures - but I love the look of the TB, the lighter weight and possibly last semi utilitarian looks, when compared to the newer LC.

I am sure once you sorted an LC (I like many have spent thousands on my TC to get it exactly how I like it set up and with equipment), but...

Shopping about, you could probably buy a TC, choice of older sports bikes and a cheap trail bike for the cost to change - sometimes more is more ;)

I had my TC in for a service on monday and took out a WC for a few hours. Did about 70 miles on very mixed roads.

My feelings pretty much mirror yours! I found the WC far too smooth and quiet - they've engineered the character out of it. Also really didn't like the fly-by-wire throttle. As said above, the bike does feel faster, but after a while (and getting back on mine) I'm pretty sure most of that is due to the crazy light throttle, meaning you open it more than the TC.

I also wasn't impressed with the ride. Once of the reasons I love the GS is that I can go for a bimble around poor quality B roads in the dales. I found the new bike too harsh, even on the 'Soft' setting, although to be fair that could be to do with the fact it was a lowered chassis bike. I will admit the handling on fast smooth roads is better than mine, in fact it felt like a naked sports bike.

I can see why the journalists loved the new bike - it's become like a lot of other fast naked bikes so I'm sure they felt much more at home on it than the previous incarnations, but I'll most definitely be keeping my TC as long as possible now. It's not that I think the new bike is worse, but it just feels like a very different bike and has different traits to the ones I like so much about mine. Oh, and the indicator switch is crap ;)

smiles vs bling!

The initial post resinated wih me (living in lakes & of being short of arse (although consideraly more than you at 5 foot 2)).

Looking at the next bike - LC or TC?????

I have this 'mantra' - smiles vs price. Will I get greater smiles from 'almoust' double the price of an LC vs a TC (lowered)?
I have yet to test the LC however a great many 'bling factors' dont seem to be swaying me towards the additional price - will it provide a wider smile factor!?

I'm looking forward to obtaining ideally a lowered 2010 GS so that I can actively contribute to this section (previously a single then a twin GS 650 - which is now the wifes)).

I look forward to smiles per miles!

Keith,

Look at a lowered standard GS seat for a possible GSA purchase. Just bought one of these off BMW. My inside leg measurement is 29 inches. I now have feet fully flat on the floor on my GSA. Although the seat does feel harder.

Try both - the difference is more than bling. They are IMO completely different bikes.

People coming from sports bikes will probably prefer the new bike as its lost a lot of the GS quirks that people love or hate. If you love the quirks you'll probably prefer the older bike.

Although people said exactly the same thing when the 1200 replaced the 1150 - I'm sure most of us will end up on one in time

Most GS's will out live the owner if ridden till death. It's only curiosity or an accident that makes us change bikes, we rarely wear them out.

If you want more performance from the boxer the new bike delivers, maybe you dont want more but the new bike hooks you in, its more than the ride by wire throttle at work, the performance is a big step up. Cant say ive felt the electronics kicking in once and i dont generally hang about. Well impressed by mine but miss the build quality and chunky switchgear of the old bikes, and those easy to read dials, the new ones are awful and tucked down too low.

All great bikes at the end of the day. No rule that says you cant be happy with the one youve got.

I'm working hard on wearing mine out ;)

Apart from the 'clonk' into 1st gear every aspect of my LC(15,000 miles) is better than my 2005 1200GS (45,000 miles) and my 2010 TC (27,000 miles) - they were both great bikes but the LC must be at least 25% better in every way ;)

I used to own a 2009 GS TC and recently swapped it in for a 2014 LC. Big mistake. I am now the proud owner of a 2013 GSA TC and I love it.
