This only works with the latest version of iTunes, so make sure you download it first!

After download, plug in your iPhone as usual.
When the little icon appears in the left column (Mungrel's iPhone) double click it.
In the Summary tab, scroll down and you'll see convert to 128KPBS.

Double click that and hey presto! It changes the format of the music on your iPhone.
Mine went down from 12 GB to 2.4GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No appreciable loss of quality as it gets played through the Autocom into my lid and I wear earplugs:aidan

But!!! It takes a couple of hours to do so don't try it if you're in a rush

I thought AAC was the default compression standard for the iPhone and that's 128 kb/s anyway.....:nenau

you may be right about that 128 figure, and default is AAC, but whatever it is, it's dictated by itunes, not the phone. it would apply to imported music only, as itunes store is pretty much all 320kbs now.

the facility to increase compression to 128kbs is a new feature of latest itunes designed for cramming more songs onto players as OP has said.
