Hello everybody,
after recent 12000 miles service and adjustment of valve clearance, my bike is doing suddenly 55-56 mpg. All previous 12000 miles, it was quite consistently doing 60 mpg.
Is this normal? Does anyone have similar experience?

Mine had the valves done at the last service (previous owner) but the comp has only ever read 56mpg :nenau done 9k mls

I had my 12k service done 2 days ago.

My (mainly 2nd gear) commute turns 59mpg before the service.

I'll reset it and see what it does now the service is passed.

Typical, every time our bikes go for a service they come back and feel worse for it. Has anybody ever taken a healthy bike in for a service and ridden home and find its much better for the £150 to £250 they have spent?
I think manufacturers invent a work schedule only to keep dealers workshops busy, its an expensive and compulsory part of operating a franchise.

In vacloves case it may be a pipe from the clean air injector (F800 only) air box or similar left off. The dealer is unlikely to have re adjusted the valves at 12000, so other than taking of the plastics, air box and lots of other bits will not have touched the engines operation. If you still have concerns its off with the plastic and check all the connections, especially round the air box, or take it back to the dealer for checking.

The only other explanation could be you are riding harder. My F800 averages 68mpg, but drops to 55 if I commute on it and rises to 75 on a steady run.
I once averaged 100mpg over 50 miles on my wifes F650 to see if it could be done, it was brain numbing boring riding though.

It appears that my fuel consumption has increased a tiny bit after the 12k service: down from 59 to 56 mpg according to the OBC.
Does it feel worse as mentioned b someone else?

err...no!

It seems smoother, in that the snatchy on/off fuelling is much reduced. First gear used to be a nighmare: choppy as hell. Now I can actually use it. And clutchless changes are smooth as anything, and possible over a wider rev range than before.

I'm happy!

Could this simply be down to the chain being adjusted a little bit tighter hence less snatch which makes for a smoother power delivery? Just a thought :idea

I don't think so, as when I'd measured the chain a week previously it was bob on.

Then the chain is getting loose I tend to miss gear changes altogether! :blast

Wow - all these mpg's being thrown around make me a little jealous. I commute day-in day-out in london, and I average around 44mpg. Even on a long motorway run I only got around 48mpg. Anyone else getting my kind of figures??

All things equal I would not complain. 56mpg is not bad at all, even on motorways. I generally get 4.5 L/per 100km. In urban i was getting 5.1 l/100km. I am a little heavy on the get go then smooth once at speed.

I have recently service with chain/sprocket, Uni air filter(foam) and iridium spark plugs. now getting more power and 4.7/4.6 L/100km urban. 8% reduction (and i believe that i am heavier on the throttle as well).

I want a power commander with adjusting computer and an exhaust mod in the future. Wonder what will happen to fuel consumption then?

I really do think that the chain and sprockets made the real difference.

We're not worthy:bow

The worst that I've had out of mine was 46mpg on the way back from the Ferry. I'd just filled up, it was late at night, and I hooked up with a Pan up the A34. I hardly dropped below 100mph, and was regularly up around 110 - 115.

I've no idea how you can get that figure. Either your computer is lying, or perhaps your not working the figures out correctly?

Either that, or you completly nail it everywhere.

You cannot be using the 6th gear then, my worst in London was 54mpg my best on an open road is 64mpg.
even racing cars off the lights I very seldom exceed 5000rpm.

On my 08 I found fluctuations in the MPG readings, however on my 60 plate 800 I have no such problems, it hasn't got the on board computer so I don't worry about fuel consupmtion now:augie just fill up when the trip reads around 190 to 200miles:thumb

I must admit I am using the OBC for the average mpg. I have checked it a couple of times with mileage/litres etc between fillups and it is about right. I don't use 6th gear on the commute, thats true, rarely 5th tbh.

However, on motorway, 6th gear at 90/100mph, the "spot" mpg reads circa 42mpg...drop down to 70mph and it goes up to around 55.

I feel like I have a problem - doesnt give any evidence that it's running rich...not sure what to do about it?

Change that front sprocket, learn to ride smooth and you might get the 66mpg I get :)

I thrashed it a bit last week and it dropped to 64 :P
