Independent Toyota Garage

The clutch on our 04 Corolla is on the way out, juddering like mad and now slipping when in gear. Had a quote of 700 euro to replace from one of the dealers. Can anyone recommend somewhere for the job? Looking in Dublin, Southside area.

Pete ,

Take a Fools Advice , Use only genuine Toyota Parts . These will out run every other Parts manufacturer.
Clutch , Pressure plate , release bearing , £270GBP.
Fitting in a Toyota Garage , £250GBP.
You will get a Lot cheaper , But i would be looking for a price from a Garage , its 4HRs work.

Alternately you could always Move up ,i,ll take your corolla , providing its a small engine.

Have a price of 400 euro all in to do the job from a specialist gearbox/clutch place, will probably see out the life of the car that we'll have it for anyway, hard to stomach 700 euro against 400!

Civil is correct except I would say to go for a Well known brand of replacement clutch, Quinton Hazell, Mintex and Ferodo, clutches were always good and I think Bluepoint is the specialised japanese parts specialist

Avoid Borg and Beck these days as they have been bought over by Firstline and quite frankly I can't see them keeping AP,s quality procedures!

Same old stuff about use "genuine parts" As I have said many times car manufactures don't make the entire car. Things like clutches, along with most electrical items are bought in. Genuine parts in that case just means it's been put in the manufactures box and includes their mark up. Fit a good quality clutch (when I was in the trade we always referred to QH products as "questionable hardware") and you should have no problems. Just use a local garage with a good reputation, it's Corolla ffs, it's about as simple as you can get. Beware some of the fast fit chains, they often have a tie up with a clutch recon company and you won't always get a new clutch. Also the better mechanics can get jobs elsewhere!

There was a time i operated Several Toyota Taxis , i used spurious non genuine parts , to my Expense .
A Genuine parts may not be made by the car maker , BUT , they are made to the car manufacturers specs.

My Advice , Which is EARNED , is to Buy Genuine Toyota Parts.

Yes, and with 30 plus years of experience in the motor trade I agree, always buy top quality parts but that does not always mean buying from the manufacturer of the vehicle. The exact same parts are often available elsewhere. Of course if your knowledge is limited and therefore you might buy sub standard parts then buying OE is a safe bet. Just don't assume you can't get the same, or sometimes better,quality elsewhere.

I do of Course Agree , there is always Similar Quality parts maybe even manufactured by the same company .
BUT , You Guys are speaking from Experience , this is a Guy with a Toyota Corolla looking for parts ,
If and when he walks into a motorfactors he is Just a Cash cow , They generally do not give a Fiddlers Flying F***
about Joe average .
The Motor industry is the most unscrupulous trade i have any knowledge of . These Guys are Gangsters .
That is why i am steering Tengiz toward genuine Toyota Parts , these are "Consistent " and give Good service life.
Not the Cheapest that the motorfactor could get for the Biggest Profit.
I have worked all my working life in the motor trade , I have costed Spurious and o.e.m. for a range of working vehicles
i know what i am talking about on this , the Cheapest Pence per Mile for a Toyota is genuine equipment. END OF.

How have you worked in the motor trade without knowing that not all aftermarket parts are "spurious" as you put it? Yes there is a lot of rubbish out there but there are many parts available for all sorts of vehicles that are exactly the same as the OE part, the only differences are the packaging and the price. I agree that people don't know this but that is no reason to ignore it. I don't know who makes the OE clutches for Toyota but once that knowledge is found buying direct from the actual cluth maker will almost always be cheaper for the same product.

The driving force for cheap parts is the end user, they are often the ones who don't care as long as it is cheap. One of the most common questions I got was "can't you do those brakes a little cheaper?" I always answered "yes, how long do you want to live? It's true some of the motor trade is unscrupulous but to include everyone in the trade as in your sweeping statements is I feel a little unfair.
