INDICATED BRAKE FAILURE

Just a quick note about some trouble I had with my 1200gs
whilst riding on a byway, I stopped for a quick break, when I restarted there was only residual braking available (ie no servo, no abs available) after a quick check around I could find nothing obvious hanging off as it was getting dark and starting to rain and I had 100 miles to get home I decided to take it easy and head home.
At it turned out, the only fault on the bike I could find was a lump of mud had wedged its self in the rear brake light switch (probably off my boot when I stopped) I've added a small ally shield now to the brake light switch to prevent this happening again

Seems to be a common problem - not mud as such but things interfering with the brake lever switches in general.

Presumably the system can't reset itself etc until the brakes are fully disengaged, and it detects this using the microswitches on the brake levers.

So if you get a brake failure, general advice seems to be - check that the levers and switches aren't fouled in some way.

Hmm, bad choice of phrase there. When I say "a common problem" I meant "a common cause of brake failure, on the rare occasion that it happens"

I had a 'brake failure' problem yesterday. Not cleared by switching off, restarting and moving forward a few yards...

After calling out recovery the guy found the problem to be the brake lever adjust being on too tight and thus the movement in the first couple of days of use left the lever not closing to its rightfull position, the rear brake light was constantly thus stopping the starting up procedure working.

Easily fixed when you know how !!!

Not just a 1200 problem... similair happened to my 1150, Servo/ABS.
I'd loosened the rear brake lever pivot to grease it and not put sensor back correctly... nearly went sailing onto the main road from my house.
