Anyone had any problems with their indicators?

By this I mean them switching themselves off.

I have a 54 12GS and they seem to intermittently switch off themselves. bike was in for a service and they didn't really find anything.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers

You do know they've got self cancelling indicators...don't you :nenau

Its a case of RTFM - as this tells you all about it. From memory, they go off automatically after 10 or so flashes whilst you are moving at speed. So if you are say indicating to come off a motorway, they may well have cancelled whilst you are still expecting them to be flashing...

As has already been said, you'll need to put your indicators on at the 200 yard marker on the motorway or else they will have cancelled before you've left the carriageway.

I think if you apply the brake it will stop them self cancelling but I'm not sure if you have to come to a stop.

If you do a search you'll fing a few bits on it. :thumb

If I could I would have them removed but I don't think you can unless someone knows any different. :nenau

I find that its one more thing to think about...'have they turned themselves off'.

Does this apply to the 54 bike. I thought it was only the later models.

Also, the left indicator has switched itself off after 4 flashes, but suppose if I was travelling at a real high speed what you guys have said has made sense.

Thanks

4 flashes does sound a little extreme!!!

What speed would that be! :nono

Mine's 04 (first batch) and self cancelling fitted as standard. Reckon you get 200-250m before they cancel.

Thanks for the replies.

This all makes sense. Checked the manual and couldn't find anything and also searched here.

Mind at ease now. Cheers

PS

Will try the distance, time thing tomorrow.

I do have a tendancy to give plenty of warning and hence switch indicators on a little early.

Does anyone know if the dealer can do some kind of update and have them removed? :nenau
I was told they can't by both my dealer and BMW tech, to me the self cancel just makes a poor indicator system absolutely crap. Pity the self cancel can't be switched off, maybe in a manner similar to the headlamp off procedure. They usually cancel early so just resetting the distance each time you press the switch would help, then you could always give it a second dab to ensure they stay on longer
Email BMW and suggest it at <[email protected]>, maybe they'll do something if enough of us ask!
