Hi everyone,

I dropped my bike this evening - a combination of a steep hill start, adverse camber, a very sharp turn and me being a complete monkey. Anyway, in a double whammy, I managed to snap both indicator stalks.

The lenses are fine but now flap around like spaniel's ears. How hard are the stems to replace and more importantly, how do you replace them?

Take off the lens, remove bulb, holder and reflector which exposes two clamp screws; undo them and the head will slide off the stem. Inside the bodywork there is a hollow nut clamping the stem to the bodywork, undo that (can be awkward but shouldn't be too tight) and slide the stem off the wiring.

The front stem requires you to remove most of the bike to gain access; superglue followed by black insulating tape is your friend here.

I was thinking about the epoxy option, but I think we're on the same page. ;)

What bike?

1100 GS.
I'm looking at getting new stalks (they seem surprisingly cheap) but wondered about how to unthread and then re-thread the wire to the bulb. I was also intrigued as to how they fastened to the bodywork of the bike. It looks like it will be a pain for someone with large hands and little patience.

C'est la vie - especially after a moments lapse of concentration combines with gravity and a full tank of petrol.

Still, on the upside, I can still deadlift the bike upright by myself.

Perhaps I should also have specified that it's the front indicators which are affected.

I seem to recall you can get to them with a pair of adjustable plumbers pliers to free them off and tighten up.

Well it's in the oilhead section so I took a wild guess ... ;)

I ask because the 1150 indicators are a piece of piss to replace, whereas the fronts on the 1100 are a nightmare.

The stalks are really tough - I'm amazed they've broken - are you sure it's not what they fit into that's broken?

It's the bit that goes into the lens housing that's snapped and I can't shove it back together. I'll buy some araldite and bodge it.
