Has anyone had any problems with their indicators ?

On the way home tonight I noticed that the right hand side indicators would come on by themselves. I cancelled them and then they came on again. I tried this several times but they just kept coming on again and again. I indicated left , then cancelled and then the right hand indicators came on AGAIN !!!! I switched the hazards on then switched them off and a few seconds later ...guess what , the right hand side indicators came on AGAIN :spitfire

Volvos and side lights spring to mind !!!!

Has anyone else experienced this ?

Hi TR, I have had this problem as well, but it's only when travelling along tar roads, every time I pass a side road that indicates, 'farm road', 'gravel road' or 'mountain pass' my indicator goes on. I did however find the solution, it was to take the side road! The indicator didn't come on again until only when I was heading back to the black stuff then by joe, at the next 'gravel road' it came on again, it has a mind of it's own! :tosser

And that's not all, when the 'gravel road' comes to an end the damn brake light comes on, I swear if I had a 'u-turn' light it would come on as well, oh well what can I do but go where the bike wants to go... :bow

Follow the indicator, this could be an omen. If you keep going right you will end up where you started. Try to avoid gardens and shop fronts. Just a thought this is not some excuse for the missus is it?. Is your local down the road on the right?

Wet weather? problem, faulty earth or moisture in the switch/relay

Thanks for your humorous remarks :)

Sprayed WD40 inside switches last night. No problems today.

Thornley could be right.

My left hand indicator stopped working, hazards worked OK. A new switch fixed the problem.

Another problem was when I turned the ingnition key the starter worked automaticly and started the engine, after the engine started the starter motor kept turning  A new handle bar switch fixed this as well.

the right hand indicators came on again tonight by themselves. New switch ordered under warranty.

Hey Activmoto, my left indicator has just stopped working (hazards also working fine). Any idea what was wrong with it? Was it a big job getting the switch replaced?

Same but different

I thought I had a similar problem with my left indicator.

Turned out that the left indicator switch catches on the tank on full left lock (used when coming out of my garage backwards). Right indicator switch is about an inch clear of tank on full lock that way.

Anyone else's do this? Or do I need to buy a new house with the garage on the other side to alleviate the problem?

Robin.

Could be the same problem, my dealer checked it over and then ordered a switch, I went back when the switch arrived and in the time it took to have a coffee it was fixed.

I had the same problem two weeks ago. The left indicator would come on by itself, and the cancel switch didn't have any effect. Dangerous with cars not knowing what I was going to do. Then the left indicator stopped working completely. Even more dangerous, especially because I am driving in traffic-chaos Italy and I was always afraid of getting rear-ended at an intersection without my left indicator on. Anyhow, took it to a dealer and he knew from my description to replace the whole switch unit collar. He confided to me that this is a known problem and that the self-activating indicator is the first stage of upcoming failure. They replaced it under warranty. But just a helpful hint to anyone experiencing it self-activitating - get it replaced before it quits on you on the road.

Safe riding everyone.

Self Cancelling indicators

My 1200 GS is indoors at Battersea having all its gremlins looked at.

Amusingly the 1200 GS demo bike I'm on (long story.....) has self cancelling indicators. Both sides go off after 30 seconds or so....
Handles better than my bike too.

My bike doesnt.

Take it in to the dealer - they replaced my left hand switch last week under warranty. Looks like they have a batch that don't like being rained on.
