info please on charging the gs

I don't no if this is any use,but recently had a flat battery of which my dealer replaced under warranty. The day I an going on my trip decide to check it.Flat.now after Several phone calls managed to drive to another dealership that was open.they then done a full check over and then completed a update on the old software and since then it has been fine.i did on the first instance buy the Bmw charger and without that would of have to rely on Bmw assist.just a note was told by the dealer when using the socket you firstly should turn the ignition on then 30 seconds later switch off to let the campus do its thing

interesting!! bike book for first service in 2 weeks will ask about this and report back!! I'm confused over the charging via the power point when sat nav left in gradle. will it charge or cut off?

Why won't you answer my question I've asked you twice?:nenau

Shitty punctuation and a lack of will to conduct experiments is not going to win the Nobel prize for physics is it.

Thanks for the replies.. except the previous 2 :redbone

For those of you who have answered the question with sensible worth while replies and want to know the answer:) I asked the tech at b.m.w dealer and the answer is :nono you can't charged via the power point when the sat nav is in the cradle

As far as punctuation is concerned I've no interest in winning the NOBEL PRIZE or any other prize for that matter! just information on a make of bike I've never owned before. also as far as conducting experiments go.. well thought that was the point of forums to help and give advice which I've found on other forums this or any other information regardless of it's insignificance as save members a load of time unwanted problems and money in repair costs.

So, I've asked you how long the bike will be sitting for, and you won't answer. It would be handy for other owners to know. I can't fathom why you won't tell us.:nenau

I intend to use my "old" optimate on my 2016 GSA TE , is it alright to connect the optimate directly to the battery , whilst not disconnecting the battery from the bike. .?

Absolutely Yes.. the positive terminal is inaccessible on the battery so they've thoughtfully extended it out to a "bobbin" with a red plastic cap on it. All accessible under the rhs panel.

If you don't want to keep taking the panel off you can fit a fused din socket wired direct to those terminals and use a din plug on your charger. This also gives you a non-CANBUS socket to run a compressor from.

I had an optimate lead wired directly to my battery on my new 2016 Triple Black by Lloyd Motorrad in Carlisle and it works fine :D

Ok.. do you use the power point via the cambus or direct from battery? I know direct from battery will always charge battery.. but was told by b.m.w tech.. that using optimate via power point hence through cambus system will not not charge with sat nav in cradle.. what the tech said was.. he as had a few owners saying that they have connected a optimate 4 cambus compatible to the gs with the sat nav in cradle and the bike battery as not charged! think the tech said.. that it turns on the sat nav or the power point turns off! I've always used a optimate via direct to battery on my previous bikes when not being used.. but bought the optimate 4 cambus compatible to use via the power point and just want to know if any other members use the optimate 4 compatible charger via the power point with sat nav in cradle with no problems?

I use my canbus charger via the power socket, sat-nav in cradle no problems. The NAV doesn't turn on.

I use an M-TEK charger with the connecting lead attached direct to the battery.

The negative attaches direct to the battery terminal and the positive is connected to the extension fitted to the bike.

i use an old optimate and their weather proof charge lead sticking out above the starter, which is also usefull for acessories etc,
The bmw socket is only for light loads ,

What is it with the trickle charger obsession people have, it's just not necessary with today's electronics and batteries? My 2014 GSA sits outside under a cover for three or four months at a time over winter and then starts first press of the button.

Exactly.:thumb

That was the point I was trying to make, but the OP just wouldn't reply to me.

I've attached one of those solar charger thingys to mine. Not sure how much use they are.
The Oxford Oximiser and the Motobatt charger did bugger all on my last bike, batteries still went flat.

Ok so my bike was last ridden early November and has been outside under a cover ever since. Last Sunday I pulled the cover off and pressed the start button. The engine sounded like it rotated twice before firing up without any trouble whatsoever. The speed of the starter motor sounded normal so the battery seems to have lost very little energy over the three months. It is a 14 plate GSA with the original battery. No need for a trickle charger!

hope you took it for a ride after it started, otherwise your now screwed

My obsession is related to my experiences with my 2005 and 2010 GS's, both of which would be brown bread after a month in my garage. My 2014 does seem different; it doesn't drink oil and it doesn't seem to discharge, but force of habit makes me feel good to have the battery in 100% charge and good health. I agree, perhaps times have changed and maybe unnecessary.

On my 2014 plate GS I found out the hard way about batteries going flat, strange you only ever find out when you all dressed ready to go out on the bike! :blast As a result I used to place my bike on trickle charge every once in a while. I'd never bothered with my bikes before. I thought it was just a one-off but when the flat battery happened again I mentioned it to my dealer. They checked their records and it turns out that some bikes had iffy batteries fitted. They changed the battery and all was well.
I've since changed the bike now and haven't had the issue. I leave my bike and only put it on trickle if it's been a long time or very cold although I don't think I really need to.
If your battery seems to require charging to keep it alive longer than 7 - 10 days it may well be that you simply have a duff battery.
