Driving along (pootling town speeds) when all of a sudden all drive power disappears and horrendus grinding noise comes from clutch/ gearbox. Get towed to garage to be told clutch has gone as has gearbox. This is a bit annoying as both were replaced under 15k ago.Neither local B.M.W. dealers will touch it and garage not able to. I think that it is just the splines on the input shaft but not to sure (quotes of£1000 + for clutch and gearbox). Is this possibly the problem and is there any one in eastern scotland can deal with it?

my 1150 did just the same at 45k-the input splines chewed off. Pidcocks charged me £750 for the work but did throw in a second-hand selector cylinder they had lying around for free! Mine was the third they'd had in with this fault apparently-but its now at 92k with no problems.

Well I have just had to bite the bullet Scrimshaws (I think) are rebuilding the gearbox for approx £360 clutch etc from motorworks and labour by Duffus in Kirkaldy all paid for by visa. Must thank Gavin at Duffus M/C for all his help . Hopefully a summer of driving ahead, and ready for the wickerman.

The really bad news is that you will be back in another 15k miles. Boxers that have input shaft problems also have an alignment problem: the crankshaft and input shaft are offset by a small amount which eats up the clutch hub and the input shaft. You would be a lot better of with a used gearbox.

Thats the same conclusion i've reached.

Thats why i asked if your bike was a blue/white model. I know there's a bike out there with a completly fecked input shaft, with just a new clutch friction plate in it so it can be sold. The previous friction plate fitted ( not by me, or by the current owner) lasted less than a thousand miles. I advised that a new gearbox was the best, and surprisingly cheapest option if he wanted to keep the bike. He's not keeping it, but selling it.
