Dublin mostly!
Hi,

Wife freakin' in Dublin cos her laptop won't go and college work is on it etc.

When she presses the power on button, the thing starts, Dell logo comes, progress bar starts at bottom of screen and then the thing goes dead.

She rang Dell who want 500 eros to send someone out, they said it needs a new motherboard. Bought in Feb 05. out of warranty. Cool or what.

At present, 500 euros sounds cheap if it fixes the bloody thing.

What ideas has anyone?

"frustrated of Riyadh"

Has she tried getting into the BIOS or starting it in 'Safe Mode' ?

Is it just the display which vanishes ?

Any sound of fans running ?

Guys,

Panic over, she moved it to another socket and it goes. Don't ask me how, it may cack again, and I've told her to get the files onto a stick "I'll learn how to do that at the weekend"....

I'd say the battery is gone and it was not plugged in properly. Maybe left lying on bed has fried something.

Thanks very much!!

18 months is about right for Dell batteries. If you're really lucky, it will be one of the ones that's subject to a recall for other reasons, and might be able to get it replaced.

WARNING :-

You should NEVER run a laptop on a bed or anything else which will allow the ventilation holes/slots to be covered...it's a recipe for a burnout !

Have you got 'new for old' home insurance ?

Wouldn't want it to fall off the kitchen bench and crack the screen without it :D :thumb

battery will last longer if plugged out when not in use and fully charged. My inspiuron 2500 battery packed up a few years ago , not I don't leave it charging when not in use and the replacement battery is giving me longer life
