I bought an SD card - failed
So returned and now sat with DVD arrived....

=======================
Just bought a DVD map from Garmin for my 660 in readiness for Autumn trip to the NW US & Canada.
This device itself works fine. I have LM updates and Garmin Express always works first time updating EU maps in Basecamp & device.....

I went DVD to have both Basecamp and device maps, as recommended by Garmin support.

First time I try to install it pops up a window recommending that I choose to download from server to get latest map version (s o the inventory is out if date between the warehouse and delivery??)- anyway, great! I am told this is a one-time offer and if I reinstall I don't get the updates...
When I try it fails to contact Garmin server (I am on-line honest).

Now when I retry (as instructed on screen) I don't get download and it still can't contact the server despite not asking the question this time.. Dead end....

UK support works office hours only - can anyone suggest anything as I am now sat here for the weekend?

Oh God. This doesnt bode well for my Nav 5 attempts for the same trip. Especially given that I'm an IT numpty. I'll be intrigued to see how you get on.

Call me naive but I just assumed that if you bought a pre loaded SD card from Garmin you could drop it into the unit & it would work?

Years ago I installed a Garmin map from a DVD. Downloaded & installed the free update a few days later. The unlock code is used when you send the map to your device.

I had the same trouble with my Zumo 550. In the end I gave, contacted Garmin and got a full refund. After a recommendation from John (the old grey one). At the weekend I'm going to have a go at down loading the free maps from Open street.

If it works it could save you £80...

Me too - and it was pretty staright forward. Managed to plot a large part of the TAT on these maps without any difficulty. I've never had the chance to test them in the field, but just working with them doing route planning leads me to believe there'll be no issue on the trails. Don't forget to leave some shillings for the great guys that put all this together.:thumb2

Used OpenStreetMaps data in my Nuvi on a family trip to Florida in 2012. Worked well. Only shortcoming is that there is a limit to the amount of data you can combine into one mapset from OSM. However, should be enough for all but the most ambitious tour. ISTR that you can stitch sets together using other tools, alternatively just have multiple sets on the same card, I think the Zumo can cope with that.

In my experience OSM data is pretty comprehensive, includes POIs and generally includes more minor tracks than comparable Garmin City Navigator mapping. There are downsides; there is no speed limit data and it's in the uncompressed Garmin format so takes up more disk space (works in older Garmins such as the 2610 as a result though).
