Insurance companies now requiring photo of garage?

pretty cheap if you just have "third party" only
I tried that for years, but despite being the only legal requirement, I was refused insurance quote unless I went for Fully Comp.
At the time I was insuring for about 10/11k. I explained that I would have gladly replaced the bike with my own money if stolen – also, saving about 2k a year could have helped the "new bike fund", but they didn't budge.

Not sure about the legality of it all (I want the quote at least), but hey.

they are not obliged to give you a quote at all so if they only want to quote full comp that is their prerogative.
That's interesting. I struggled to get anywhere near a reasonable quote in EN1 for third party only on my 1250.

Have you tried to get a quote for a London address for a reasonably expensive bike?

For whatever reason, it was cheaper fully comp.

as for TPO being cheaper, that ship sailed a long time ago - it is pretty well discussed by the likes of Martin Lewis that those requesting TPO are actually a higher risk of having a massive TP claim. It seems people who take out full comp are more careful riders/drivers presumably as they have some regard for the large depreciating asset they are controlling. Underwriters do not like TP policies and you have found a broker/insurer/underwriter that won't issue TPO.

I get that, but my understanding is that - by law - you need third party only.

The impression is that the motor insurance companies I dealt with (quite a few over the years) were pushing for fully comp with, sometimes, risible excuses.
Then: is fully comp going to be cheaper? Probably. But I want to see both prices.

actually, TPO cover is not the same as the statutory minimum, that is called RTA (Road Traffic Act) cover. This is effectively what you get in the Europe under EEA (or their local equivalent, unless your insurer offers an upgrade as part of your T&C)

I'm sure they can program the bot to say £1500 FC, £4500 TPO if it makes you happy

It doesn't.
Motor insurances make money on something that is (rightly so) mandate by law.
The least they could do is not forcing you into a type financial product you don't need.

I'll survive this, but I don't see the point in justifying this habit.

Conversation I had years ago:

- The premium for fully comp is [insane price]
- Thanks, why so expensive?
- Value of the bike sir, in case it gets stolen.
- Ok, I'd be happy to not insure it for theft then. I can replace it if it gets stolen.
- No sir, we can't quote it as it is too much of a risk for the insurer
- What risk?
- If it gets stolen
- But I'm telling you I don't want it insured for theft, just third party, you risk nothing. If it gets stolen you pay me nothing.
- ...
- So?
- If you don't insure it for fire and theft it means you are untrustworthy, we cannot quote for just third party.

This is one of many pathetic excuses I heard on the phone. We're talking about 10/11k insured value. Not 100.

Anyway, I'll survive. I understand that the greater policy detail sometimes allows for cheaper insurance prices, as I stated a few posts before, I just don't like they are allowed to push people into products they don't need/want.

UK is a rip off from start to finish. Period.
Here in PT it is more transparent and much more customer focused and much cheaper.

It strikes me that the UK insurers treat you as though you have some kind of disease!

i have third party only on two bikes, kept in a london front garden, £250 with full ncb. but their combined value is only about £3000

Just changed my insurance with Devit/BMW for a R1300GS, usual questions, any changes etc, no photo required but they asked me to confirm the bike would be in a brick garage with a lock and next to the house, and that I would be the only person with access to move the bike. So I assume if we leave the side door (in back garden) unlocked there may be a claim issue.
