Planning a trip to the Black Sea, so began arrangements today.
I'm insured through BMW Insurance and they say the underwriter won't give cover for Romania, Serbia & Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovnia.....
What's the deal? Do you "buy at the border"?
Are my insurers rubbish?

You HELPFULL suggestions and advice would be appreciated..

Cheers!

:beerjug:

No your insurance company is not rubbish. Most cover ALL EU countries, but those listed are not in the Union. Try the AA or specialist brokers. Your insurance co should be able to recommend brokers for you.

Hmmmmm......I think I better call them back today: "Advisor", when asked said they "wouldn't have a clue" how I would go about arranging the appropriate cover....

Ta!
Chris.

We couldn't get cover for Croatia last year, so we bought it at the border. Cost about £8.00 for 15 days cover. Look for buildings containing shipping or haulage firms as soon as you've cleared customs.

You'll need the original logbook etc, not copies.

Croatia seems to be covered as normal EU country on my policy......How the times change...
Forgot to take my paperwork with me today so no progress so far..

Okay!
We give up on Serbia & Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovinia..

How do we get insured for Romania????

:nenau

Green card for Romania

I have BMW insurance, rang the agents Devitts?, they said they would contact the underwriters, what are your dates in Romania? they asked. The green card arived 5 days later!
Romania is magnificent!!!!

Rod,

I also have an insurance policy through BMW, and also wish to travel to Romania.... with Chris (above) as it happens.
I contacted BMW Motorrad Insurance, who contacted the agents (Devitts), who then asked the underwriters (NIG) about cover for Romania, and the answer was "No... EU countries, Croatia, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland only".
I queried this with BMW, saying that someone else with BMW insurance (you) had got cover OK, and they asked "Who is their underwriter?" If it is NIG they will pursue it on my behalf... i.e If one person has cover, then I should also. A reasoned argument, I thought!

So, Rod, who is your underwriter?

And (assuming we get cover) what should/shouldn't we miss in Romania?

Brian.

My underwriter is NIG.

The countries NOT covered were:
AL, BG, BIH, IL, IR, By, MO,MK,MA, TN, TR, UA, SCG.
The policy no was KM103259 additional premium required was NIL. It was valid from16/06/05 to 27/06/05.

If you PM me your address I'll send you a photocopy if you want one.

Romania not to be missed:
Old cities, ignore the communist concrete!
Mountains, valleys, wildlife, Ursus beer about 30p a pint.
Spoked wheels are needed, even main roads have great potholes:D . The minor roads, tracks are where you need to go to see the best bits. The best maps are bought in Romania itself.
Beware of romanian sheep dogs, they are 'kin huge with an amazing turn of speed, they have been bred to scare off bears, and seem to have a telepathic link between them so that that they can coordinate their 'attack' on the two wheeled bears.:D :D

Whilst riding the minor roads look out for eagles hunting in open countryside.

Hi all,

Sorry to hijack old thread.

Me and a pal are currently in Hungary and have a few extra days holiday. So we would like to go to Romania. Our ( E bike) insurance will not cover country.

Can we buy insurance at the border? If so, where and do u have any good tel numbers?

Thanks in advance

Have a look at the Horizons Unlimited web site. Found lots of info on insurance etc. Ended up getting cover from a German company on the site for my trip around Eastern Europe. Good service policy arrived on time stated and all seemed ok, just glad I never had to see if it worked. But good for the piece of mind. Will try to find the details still got a bag full of paperwork and maps etc to unpack

I didn't get it in writing, but Carol Nash listed all the EU countries on the back of the cert as covered for something like 44 days. They told me after checking with "head office" that I was also covered for Croatia , Bosnia, Slovakia, Czech Rep., and Slovenia. Got done for speeding in Hungary, the Police gave me the ticket checked the cert then waved me on. I kept the ticket as a momento. ;)

I too would be interested in the information! May be you'd put the rough ideas down? Provided Iran is Ok, planing is to ride back throught that way to India last half of 2007. If Iran is no go... then ? The stans.. ? China? KKH to Pakistan and on or ? UAE .. boat to Pakistan and on ... but I'd like to see Hungary, Romania .. etc..
