Hi All
Apologies if im
In the wrong place, but here goes.
Is the GS becoming the Range Rover of the bike world, owners of these cars are unable to find insurance;especially in London and I have just had a similar experience trying to get my new GSA insured.
I’m 63 no points on license,Passed test in 1980 have bike, car, hgv, bus license 9 years no claims.had a triumph tiger 1215 for 9 years and was paying around £300 fully comp.
In March I purchased a 1250 GSA Ralley, but couldn’t get a quote without a registration so paid for the bike in cash and then tried to get insurance. Nobody would offer me a quote in the end I managed to get one through Bennets for £1285,which I had to pay as I had the bike arriving, today I enquired about adding business cover and was quoted an additional £668,and my new policy would total 2699,so as well as the add on my policy has gone up by £500 ,Bennets can’t explain it,my job has changed but no other circumstances, is there anyway I can get the insurance company to tell me why my policy has quadrupled, bizarrely my car insurance has gone down by 10%,
I may have to sell my new bike as this is extortion

I don't think insurers like the look of the Rally - due to me having no garage and a total loss (following the theft of previous bike), I was quoted £7k. A std 1200 TE was £1.6k.

Only 1 insurer would quote me.

15 years riding, no claims on my policies, RoSPA gold...

Living in EN1 at the time.

Pretty much the same as the Range Rover. There is a massive demand for RRs, GS bikes and spare parts in countries without a dealer network. There is a supply chain to meet that demand by robbing bikes here in the UK. As an island nation we have many ports from where containers of stolen vehicles and parts can be dispatched without being troubled by the authorities. It seems France is going the same way.
Ride an unpopular bike!

You must have had a claim on your policy. You say you had a total loss due to a bike theft.

I wonder how long it will be before we see a new 1300GSA being wheelied, stoppied and generally thrashed around the streets of South America in all those videos i keep seeing on the web....?

I doubt a container of several R1300GS would get to S.America. At least one of them will self combust and take out the ship.

To help you (or not) there is an entire sub-section dedicated to insurance in all its forms.

Here bods moan, rant and rage about it, whilst some others revel in telling everyone how little they pay. Oh, and everyone swears that insurers never pay.

:beerjug:

PS Yup, insurance premiums on what are perceived to be ‘high risk’ bikes have, for a while now, been going up disproportionately faster than other lines of insurance, which have seen well reported rises, too. That said, many who have raged incandescent over the increases they have seen, do often (after a bit of effort) shopping around, report back that they are now paying less than last year.

The good news, if there is to be some, is that the market is cyclical, prices rise and fall. For years, the msrket was cheap and everyone (at least the buyers) was happy. That came, as it so often does, to a crashing halt. Some insuers and / or brokers went bust or just said “Enough is enough” and closed their doors. Less choice, equals higher prices; simple as that.

Oh and yes, for a heavily regulated industry, dealing with millions of customers each month, it does seem to be run in a fashion more akin to the Wild West, with call centres staffed by chimps. There are of course some chimps on the other end of the phone lines, too.

Ive been with Bemoto for a number of years and a clean record. In Nov 24 I traded in my 19 GSA HP for a 23 GS. TE
When I rang to update the policy which had been £263 in August 24 they wanted another £144.
Apparently one of the factors now in determining premium is the mere process of buying a newer bike as opposed to keeping an older one.
Not the fact that the machine is newer with a higher value but the mere fact that I was changing my bike.
Work that one out?

Problem is the whole vehicle insurance system regarding repairs is rotten to the core, vehicles are being written off for relatively minor damage due to their recommended repair companies hiking up bills with horrendous storage and vehicle hire fees which they spend more time pushing rather than getting on and doing the repairs.
Just look at the many YouTube videos of companies buying lightly damaged cat n vehicles for buttons from the likes of Copart and having them repaired (often using as new used parts) in less than 24 hours.
We all know of a certain motorcycle specialist repair company who are all about pushing the costs as high as possible meaning simple 2 or 3 day repairs are taking 12 weeks plus to complete .
It needs an independant body to investigate the true cost of repairs compared to the prices that these companies run up.
This is why insurance is going through the roof year on year

I’ve been quoted over £1000 to insure mine with one company, and £370 from another fully comp, the £370 one has £1000 of compulsory and voluntary excess.

Mind blowing for a guy with so many years NCB.

My Harley insurer wouldn’t quote for the GSA!

Happened to me as well.
Swopped a R1250RT for a R1250R.

Insurance went up from £700 to £1200 (yes, inside M25) because it was a different, albeit newer and more valuable bike.
This year it is back down to £700. Of course, I now have an additional year of experience riding a 1250 BMW, but the R is still more valuable than the previous RT.
