Having just spent a couple of Hours doing the Annual Telephone Trawl around the various Brokers to obtain a reasonable Quote for the coming year one thing which bothers me is as follows. Years ago when the Renewal Quote dropped on the mat the amount of NCD earned was shown on the Quote. ie NCD 6 Years. This hasn,t happened for some time now. I happened to Query this with one of the Brokers today and the answer was "we don,t need to see proof of NCD unless you make a claim". This is all well and good but as time passes and I change Brokers and Insurance Companies year on year just how do I prove my No Claims Record. I have had continous Bike Insurance since 1993 without a Claim but in the absence of the the Renewal Quote with the NCD how do I prove it !!.

Your expiring motor insurer (not the broker) will, if requested, send you confirmation of your expiring no claims bonus.

The broker might, if you ask them, ask the insurer for you.

Hi Mike.........as above, write to your present Insurance comany. I did a few year back etc.

I think insurance is now all on a central database, so they may be able to check through that?
They certainly do checks - I have 2 lots of no claims and after moving one policy I got a call saying that my no claims was not valid as it was being used on another car. all sorted out OK though.

I got my latest insurance certificate through yesterday by email and I print it out myself. I certainly hope they aren't relying on that as proof of insurance.

You've raised the tip of a bigger iceberg there. The checking of everything you have said on the proposal form is now left until after a significant claim - so if you've been a bit careless about the mileage you do, or the garaging or any mods - thats when it will be found out. Usually they wont quibble if the error is irrelevant to the claim but they can do so if they are so minded.

What I do and would suggest that everyone does is;
Keep all your old Schedules and certifcates as they normally say how much NCB you have.(or at least some used too!!!:eek::eek:)
But on my last proof of NCB request for my present insurer all it said was 'he has a min of 3 years NCB' Which was the number of years that I was with them, the crafty feckers:spitfire:spitfire. I then had to tell my new insurers that I actually had 9years NCB, I then explained and supplied them with the copies of all the schedules/certs proving that I never had a claim etc and they were more than happy to accept that. I would dread to think of all the hassle I would have had trying to prove that I was telling the truth:eek::eek: and it would of been me who would have had too prove the facts I expect and not for them to find out.:mcgun:mcgun

Yup,the insurers are not really out to get you, but they will if they see any opportunity.

Many years ago Bike Insurers did not offer no-claims discount, but each year I requested confirmation of my Claim-free years, each time it took a number of telephone calls as they explained there was no point to my request.

Then they started offering no claims discount - if you could prove it, I was pretty smug when I re-newed my insurance that year.

Bout the one and only clever thing i did regarding riding bikes:augie

My last insurer noted the bike was kept in a timber shed at my home, they told me this would not effect any theft claim, docs arrived by post and "exclusion 006" had been added, after much digging, a list of the exclusions was posted to me, 006 states if bike is not in a brick/block garage with a concrete floor when parked overnight at the home address, theft insurance does not apply. I had to ring them to have this removed - they even commented that the timber shed was listed on their file. Without this correction, they would not have paid me for a theft claim from my home!

Check your docs when they arrive
