I've recently ordered my first new bmw,its a r1200gs te,I'm due collect it in a month.i've asked my current insurers, biketeam for a quote and they came back with 647 quid, motorrad quoted 580 with 450 excess for one bike.i'm 48 year old, been on the road since 1983,no convictions, bike garaged.I pay 150 for my cbf1000 at the moment and can't help thinking 4 times the price for a policy on the new one is a bit mental.any pointers greatly appreciated:confused:

Try Principal insurance. I'm 39 and have just paid around £110 (I can't be arsed to dig out the paperwork, but it's close to this :D) for my 2015 GSA TE.:thumb

You are being had there brummy bloke, try MCN Compare, usually gets you a good deal.

I'm 31, I paid £89 fully comp for my 2006 GS

tried mcn, spoke to the same bloke from principal that I spoke to 10 minutes ago! I'm having serious reservations about this bmw buying business!

so what are you not telling us it would seem they all think your a bit of a risk:confused:

I got a good deal with LV this year was with Carole Nash but they had gone up a lot. Main problem seems to be the value!

I've nowt to hide,i'm a hgv class 1 driver, pcv driver, got i.a.m driving cert, been riding bikes without a break for 32 years,no conviction,it may be the value of the bike that's doing it.That said I have a Toyota worth a bit more that costs only 300 fully comp for me and mrs brummybloke,i'll try lv dave, one never knows,i have a van insured with them

Me and the wife are both with LV with our cars, was with them for house as well but they put that up this year, can't win with any of them!

You're lucky! I have a multi bike policy, rang current brokers to change over to new GSA and the current insurer wouldn't insure the bike! after a few heart stopping moments and some other massive quotes I found ebike that would insure it at a reasonable rate.
So started up a new policy with ebike multi bike policy no problems.

Try Adrian Flux. I was quoted £240 fully comp for my 2015 1200RT which is top spec and high value, plus my2003 1150 GS. Clean license, IAM.

It must be your postcode me old mate it shouldn't be that much something fishy there.

Go to the Insurance section of UKGSer, lots of good information there.

Failing that, here's the advice distilled:

(1) As you are rapidly realising every man and his dog is similar but different. What suits Eric the Biker in Portsmouth with his £1500 motorcycle, garaged, used once in blue moon with a squeaky clean licence and no pillion cover, may well not suit Fred the Biker from Brum or Ronald the Biker from Invergordon.

(2) There are no shortcuts to low premium quotes. The only direct route is for you, not anyone else, to get on the phone and ringing up as many brokers and insurers as you can reasonably manage.

(3) The questions (answer them truthfully) will by-and-large be the same from each, so have the answers written down to save you valuable time going "ummmmm errrr" when asked for the 15th time what your date of birth and postcode are.

(4) Use the same pad of paper to record the basic details of each quotation you receive and who gave it to you. Finish your day by working out which is best and proceed accordingly.

Thousands of people do it every day and they can't all be clever. Somehow they manage; you will, too.

Try confused.com, aggregator /comparison site. It should churn you out about 20-30 separate quotes.

£170 for me on GS TE , 44 year old clean history etc. it's not an expensive bike to insure compared to others I've had.

It's not a ropey brum postcode is it ?!:D

Isn't this to do with no claims bonus? Or rather - the lack of it when you get a second bike?

Could be postcode. Try mine: WR6 6RA - 2 Church View. I've always had competitive quotes. I've got a similar licence profile to you.

I always used BMW insurance until they doubled the premium for some unaccountable reason, two years ago. Now I use MCE who do fully comp for £157 on my K1300S.

The (unaccountable) reason is that around two years ago, Allianz pulled out of being the BMW Motorrad insurer, replaced by Equity Red Star, who took a different view on the premiums being charged.

Thankfully MCE did not share that view, or you would have been stuffed.

Once again, shopping around is shown to be the only (fully accountable) method of securing a good deal and being certain. No short cuts or mates' best advice quite match it.
