Hi All

Read quite a lot of pages of this forum before buying and R850 for a winter commute on a few months ago, been great to use and a lot more comfortable than my ZX6R......I must be getting old!

Anyway, all been fine until the other day when it started cutting out whilst driving home, pulled over and ended up getting it recovered as didnt want to risk it doing it in heavy traffic.

It seems to be an intermittent fault which obvioulsy are the hardest to locate, have looked through the forum again and seen lots of posts with regards to the wires on the ignition loom failing after a certain time, mines a R plate with 50k miles on it so that may be the case but dont really want to fork out £60 plus vat for the part if thats not actually the fault!

When the ignition is turned on and the fault manifests itself you can hear the fuel pump switching on and off, another electrical sort of clicking and the rev counter flickers up and down as can be seen by the video linked to here?

Anyone got any ideas, already spent quite a few hours being puzzled by it and the ZX doesnt have heated grips and its baltic here in Scotland at the moment!

Thanks

Any luck with this?

My 850 r has been running a bit off for a bit. Loosing revs at idle hard to start.

Now it's dead! Mines doing something similar! However, instead of it flickering, the rev counter is going up when I twist the throttle but engine not running.

Might put up another thread but this does look similar...

As Motobiker said, AFAIK they're the same, just differen plugs but email them first to be sure. Someone on here was doing a test on these a while back, but basically it's just two components stuck on a metal plate, some wire and a plug... worth a check before parting with £200 ;)

Just to add, I had all those symptoms and it turned out to just be a deaf battery. I had the flocking rev counter etc.

Oi Smelly You Muppet will you check what you're posting before you post it up LOL

Dead Battery not a Deaf One! LOL Flicking not Flocking or are you drifting toward China again :aidan

Trying to cut corners with Batteries that are past their sell by date causes most of these problems

I understand from my former foreman that the sensors are susceptible to current surge and certainly 90% of the ones I have changed, have been, with just a few being bad insulation in the wiring

good Luck anyway

Smelly muppet! Oi!

Sorry about the typo doc. iPhone with a few bears can cause all sorts of trouble. Lol!

Amazing how well the bike is with a good battery. All problems solved.

Here livinlos, any luck? Sorry for the hijack on your thread.

Been incredibly busy with the kids etc and only actually got round to doing the bike this week!

In the end bought a new hall sensor at a cost of £140 delivered.....part arrived Tuesday so a mechanic mate came round to help me fit it. Hardest part was getting the multiplug past the oil line!

Once fitted bike started immediately, no cylcing of the fuel pump or fickering of the rev counter :)

However was running rough, so pulled the plugs and they were horrible, two new ones put in, runs better but still not smooth and backfires sometimes when rev'd.....

Had plug leads out with soark plug in and grounded and both seem to spark properly........going to check the coils for correct resistence today and if thats all ok then the timing.....after that I am stuck again!

Sorry for the late update...two little kids means time just flies by, luckily have alternative bikes to use but neither as comfy as the BMW for the commute!

Check that both the throttles are closed sometimes (= quite often) the cable end rises out of the holder on one side as you replace the tank and one throttle is partially open causing bad running and popping and banging

Easy check is flicking the throttle and making sure both are coming back to their stops

While you were typing I was doing just that....had checked them as per the sticky when finished installing the halls sensor and they were both in the correct position yet somehow whilst installing the new plugs and putting the plastic trim back on I had managed to knock the rhs one out of its holder.

Its all good now, idling and running perfectly :)

Next job is to order some replacement wiring and two new sensors and have a go rebuilding the hall sensor, so in another 50k miles I dont get ripped off for an outrageously priced component!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions..........looking forward to Monday morning traffic on the BMW again :)
