Intermittent starter prob

Went to get papers on Sunday, came out bike would not start so bumped it.
Got home - starts fine, for a while.
Symptoms :
- when it starts all seems ok - no nasty noises and battery is definitely not flat.
- when it doesn't start, the relay clicks so not the switch. The panel lights dim very slightly - so its not pulling heavy current like if the starter is jammed.

Any clues folks - could it just be the relay, would it be worth changing this before I dismantle to get at starter ? How to check ?

Check your battery connections first including the earth to the bike

funnily enough, mine's just recently exhibited exactly the same symptoms. had to bump it outside the dentists a couple of weeks back.

i put the battery on a load tester and it was shagged. new odyssey has cured it

that was good from your point of view. i had to buy it after seeing you and vern glaring in the mirrors

Hi

Try putting the headlight on and then starting it. If the headlight dims dramatically or goes out its the battery or the connections to the battery.

If not I would expect that the starter solenoid is sticking. Common and easy to fix.

Is it a 1000cc ? Some are lazy starters ( like proff) Mine does that..just re press the starter and away she goes and all is well in the world again

It is 1000 but when its dead its really really dead. When its ok its not lazy.
Charged battery overnight and checked earth - both ok.
Have ordered new relay - when its dead there is relay noise but not solenoid noise. If that doesnt work i'll strip it

the fact that you had the battery on a charger overnight does not mean it's charged.

i mean, it might be, but....

I thought there was a relay to turn off the h/light while the starter button was pushed?

Not wishing to scare you, it may be the rotor ??
Check everything first though (as they tend to be less expensive).
Iv had real probs with my electrics etc.(and some VERY wierd goings on's with lights etc etc ) I tried everything, like you are doing, and it turned out to be the rotor.
Running fine now.

I discovered that - the one next to the starter relay clicks if the headlight is on. The starter one is grey and nearest the frame tube.
Regarding the battery, I'll only know if I get it checked out which I will, but I believe it to be ok - everything is lively when it does decide to start.

Solenoid is kaput on the valeo
I had in stock a Bosch for the R80/7 from ebay which I bought 2 yrs ago because the R80 starter weas screechinng and I thought itn was fecked.
Fitted it and it works great !!
Took the torrey canyon out with no airbox on sounded magnificent !!
Kenny the Bosch starters behave in a lazy way so I guess thats what you have - the gearing must be different
Result - I can go on the hambledon boys rideout monday, anyone in surrey google it its a good craic

Bosch turn over slow, Valeos are faster, the Nippon Densos are the Biz much better than either.

Glad you found the fault, Thought you had started something as when I went out to Bertha this morning, She made some funny noises and refused to start. I thought the battery might have been flattened so used jump leads and away she went. Had a good ride out to Plymouth but on the way home she just jut out and stopped. Plenty in the battery, lights very bright but just clicking noises when the button was pushed.
After a bit of a search I found the positive battery connection was a little bit loose, only a bit but I tightened it up and away she went,
Amazing how something as simple as that can stop the job.

what i really want to do is kep the valeo and fix it, as I prefer the feel of it to the bosch. If I change my mind i'll let you have it

Do you know what the fault is on the Valeo solenoid?

If its jammed it is easy to dissassemble and lubricate. If it needs a new solenoid I can provide and fit a new one at a very modest outlay.
