Internet Connection indicator?

When i was on diallup, my PC used to have two little monitor icons at the bottom of the screen that flashed green/black screens to sort of show the state of my internet connection. If I clicked on them, I would get a pop-up that would show me current speed of connection.

Now I'm on Broadband they're no longer there. Is it not possible to have them showing with an 'always-on' Broadband connection?

From Start menu choose Control Panel,.
Click on Set Up or Change Your Internet Connection
Choose Connections tab
Highlight your Broadband connection, then click on Settings.
From this window click on Properties.
You will se a small box at the bottom 'Show icon .........when connected'
Tick this and it should do the trick!

That's cos you are using Classic View for your Control Panel and not Category View

good point, but it still takes me to internet properties where the settings button is greyed out.....

.....cos i'm on a LAN with a router, so it's all irrelevant as i suspected. you'd need to connect via a modem.

i never wanted the indicator, i was just curious.

Control Panel > Network Connections > right-click on your connection and select properties. Check-box at the bottom.

I'm on a Lan/Router too.

( although I suppose that doesn't actually tell you you're connected to t'internet)

One is for the LAN and one is for the Internet connection. If it really bothered me, I presume that I could turn them off

In control panel... there's a 'Network' icon, but no Network connections icon or tab.

I'm on Win98

If you are connected via router (wired or wireless) you can log into that to tell your far more meaningful stuff about the real connection rather than the fact that your NIC is 100Mb or 10Mb.

For instance mine just told me this...

Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 1152 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 288 kbps

Not bad considering I failed the test for a free upgrade from .5MB-2MB and was going to have to remain on .5MB

depends on the router.

i only know about the thomson speedtouch 510, which you have do some archaic telnet nonsense with.

if, by chance, that's what you have i'll post the info.

Most have a web based interface and are adressable via your local area network. The manual that came with yours should tell you what that is.

I have installed Netgear, Belkin Linksys and BT's own one and all of them do this.

Only one network card but the Network Connections screen shows two entries. One for the LAN and one for the Internet Gateway

Willstat, try this address and you should be prompted for a username and password. If you don't understand what is being talked about, they are probably "admin" and "password"
