Sorted! I followed Michael R1150GS Adventure's advice and phoned the Apple Store she bought it from. The call was forwarded to a helper in the USA who got me to download (or possibly upload?) iTunes 
onto my PC. After half an hour it turned out that I needed to enter my Apple ID before installing it, at which point I reminded him that the whole point of the call was to find out what the effing Apple ID was. He then said that it was my email address. Sweet Jesus, he wasn't just not in the same country, he wasn't even on the same planet.
Of course, if I had paid more attention to Zoomboxer's post then I might have saved everybody's time as well as the price of the phone call.
